I think they just wanted to see a masked guy win an award.

I think that is somewhat reductionist MFunk. Exit Through the Gift Shop was much more than Style Wars.

It was a lot deeper than just graffiti (which wasn't even around in the 50s). It was also the best documentary of the year imo.

You also forget that this is the same academy that makes films like Titanic to win. It's like complaining about why don't hardcore Christian Republicans aren't okay with sodomy. It's not part of their world view and is easy for them to disagree with. An easy political topic like the bad economy or the war is always a sure winner.

Are you saying that writing on walls or things like that weren't even around before the fifties? Vandalism is a new idea too, huh? What about political graffiti which has been around for centuries?

I thought it was the worst song of the evening. Though the Paltrow song might just beat it. ouch.

You know the performance sucks when you're still wondering whether or not it's a joke when the second verse starts.

Come on, though. I don't know what opinions were of Inside Job around here, and I didn't see it myself, but AFAIK it was just about universally admired. It's not like they picked some random shit to avoid Exit.

Exactly. It was always a horse race between Exit Through the Gift Shop and Inside Job. The former deserving the accolades of advancing the documentary medium and the latter deserving the accolades of being extremely important and relevant (with calls for it being shown in every high school in America). I am sure it was a tough decision between advancing a medium or a medium that naturally should highlight something important.

Street art/graffiti in the colloquial form (as an element of Hip Hop) was not around until Taki 183 in the late '60s.

I didn't say it was a random choice or the better choice. I'm just saying it's a far easier choice of topic for people to vote on and is more abstract with what it wants to accomplish than a documentary with a clear political agenda like Inside Job.

They're in their graves safe from Celine Dion's music. They have a reason to smile.

Why does everyone forget Rohmer? Modern American cinema owes at least as much to him as Chabrol. Can anyone explain choosing one, but not the other?

I was even surprised they even showed Chabrol.
