Thank you Criterion for listening to our complaints about the cover being upside down.

So, now we're not celebrating Hitler?
I just bought brown breeches.

They actually made it worse. As if that were possible in the first place.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
At least the change is orientationally accurate though, as it reflects how, since the original cover design was announced, both Chaplin and Hitler have rolled over in their graves.

I wonder if we'd be any easier on the Chaplin covers if there wasn't the comparison to the amazing Kate Beaton poster hiding in the backs of our minds

No, the Chaplin covers are among the very worst no matter which way you look at it. Their ugliness is simply incomprehensible. The Kate Beaton poster is just salt on the wound.

While we are at it Criterion, the Topsy Turvy cover could prob use a flip to, you know, just to get the best cover out of each as you can.

I love both Chaplin covers. I think the minimalism works well. As a matter of fact I'm going to wallpaper my room with both Modern Times and Great Dictator covers and constantly PM the images to Highway 61.Highway 61 wrote:No, the Chaplin covers are among the very worst no matter which way you look at it. ^Wait until all of the other simple Chaplin covers are released to do such a thing.

Maybe that's saved for a all-in-one huge boxset?matrixschmatrix wrote:I wonder if we'd be any easier on the Chaplin covers if there wasn't the comparison to the amazing Kate Beaton poster hiding in the backs of our minds

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
What I like about the cover art to TOPSY TURVY is that the illustration actually works both right-side up and upside down; when looking at it one way, you don't automatically see the other image turned on its head - it's done right, in other words.
With THE GREAT DICTATOR, you're left with either the Little Tramp wearing a kerchief or Hitler wearing a lobster bib.
I know this has been discussed to death on this thread, but seeing the larger image of the TOPSY TURVY artwork for the first time made me appreciate the skill in creating a convincing illustration in this manner.

Topsy Turvy is nice, but it still doesn't get any better than this:

The only thing reversible in the image is the Princess Bride title in the middle.

I mean, what's good in that then? Words are made reversible more easily than drawing.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
a) The image portion of the cover is obviously not supposed to be reversible.
b) It must be really difficult to make text reversable, but someone in graphic design correct me if I'm wrong. That Princess Bride cover really seems like something special.
c) It just wasn't worth pointing out that the image isn't reversible, because it's obviously not what the cover is going for.
d) Thank you for your time.

I'd like to see you make your own that's appropriate to the film of your choosing, completely legible, and looks exactly the same both ways. If you haven't responded in five minutes, I win the argument.andyli wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambigram
