Fear not, the second Hanzo the Razor was added, finishing the trilogy online.

Haha, I was going to say exactly the same thing about 47 Ronin.

I'm a much bigger Monicelli fan, but I suppose that statement applies to most of these films.

I'm tempted to get the free Hulu trial in order to watch this, my only experience with it previously having been the atrociously subtitled Image disc. I've been meaning to buy the Madman, but the cost has kept me from doing so, ergo, I second the sentiments regarding a physical format release.

Thank god, that's one of his best movies. Maybe only The Wind is better and if they can smuggle that (no way in fucking hell) that would instantly make it the best release of the year.

What's the soundtrack on the Hulu version of Phantom Carriage (doom metal or strings)?

I see they also put up more Kaurismaki - Ariel and The Match Factory Girl. Watched Shadows in Paradise over the weekend and loved it, can't wait to get to these.

I maybe shouldn't be talking about it, but there are ways to access Hulu from overseas right? Has anyone overseas tried to watch any Criterions through Hulu?

You can try proxies. I know that if you use Firefox, you can install the FoxyProxy plugin and subscribe to a premium (read: high speed) proxy in the US for something like $8-9 USD. You can also connect to free US proxies, but the quality can't be guaranteed. I've subscribed to a UK proxy for almost 2 years now, to get access to the BBC iPlayer.

A lot of universities have VPNs available for their students and staff also. I'm using mine at Warwick whilst I'm abroad in Italy and Germany this year for this sort of thing.

The Autobiography of a Princess is an extra on the Heat and Dust DVD

The Lion has Wings is an extra for Thief of Bagdad

Madadayo is in the Kurosawa 100 set (and unlike the previous two likely will receive a spine number eventually )

Also the Jungle Book is on a network called Gravitas in July, not Criterion (though hopefully they will put a better copy up themselves ...)

No, I think that's BS. If anything Netflix will be more reluctant to carry Criterion DVDs (and especially Blus). They're basically looking for any excuse to drop physical media, and Criterion's F.U. is a pretty good one.
Now it seems blockbuster is dropping the ball as far as carrying new Criterion releases is concerned. Naked Kiss, Shock Corridor, Army of Shadows, Cronos, and Yi Yi are all unavailable on blu ray. Then Topsy-Turvy, Harvey Milk, Mikado, White Material, and Le Cercle Rouge are all "on order".

FYI, I'm keeping track of this here. There's also some discussion about how BB's recent going up for auction might be to blame.

I find the Phantom Carriage hint in the newsletter (as well as the appearance of Kuroneko on Hulu, a movie we all know is going to get a mainline release) to be a nice rebuttal against the fears that unreleased movies were simply going to be 'dumped' on Hulu. I don't think Hulu has changed their release schedule at all. It is just is another venue to which they can put out Janus titles, especially unreleased ones that are far down in the priority queue.

It probably makes sense for Hulu to serve as a kind of testing ground, where the more popular titles there move up in the queue for a real release. Of course, having said this, now I'm going to have to actually subscribe to Hulu and put my favorite unreleased films there on constant rotation to improve their chances.
