I know that The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is out of print, but is there reason to believe that Koch has lost the rights and Criterion has picked them up?

Oh I hope so.

Demy and Ray coming to Criterion (in Ray's case, U.S. dvd in general) in the same month (if true) is great.

Though I'm not terribly prolific here, I'd like to throw in my congratulations as well. As for your predictions, we are getting (at least) Naked, you sly fellow. From Criterion's page on the film:
Restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Mike Leigh, with DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
I've been hoping for this since Topsy-Turvy was announced, but was discouraged by the lack of precedent for New Lines BDs in the collections. Hopefully, we can now expect Short Cuts and (my most wanted upgrade) My Own Private Idaho sooner rather than later.

The release of Naked on Blu-ray portends all kinds of great things. It means that Criterion is not losing the rights to the New Line titles, and have likely renewed and updated the license via Warner... which hopefully is the prelude to the handful of Warner titles that Criterion will be releasing.

From the Beauty and the Beast page
# High-definition digital transfer from restored film elements, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
# Composer Philip Glass’s opera La Belle et la Bête, presented in 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio as an alternate soundtrack

Thinking about it some more, I'd say Life During Wartime is a safe bet.

^ Then what do you think is left out, guess-wise? Hopefully Ray and Demy are in, but I know your guessing so I won't get my hopes up.

Ray is definitely in. I'm not 100% on Demy, just a gut feeling, but nothing confirmed.

^ It's no prob. Your guessing is better than nothing, so actually thanks. Ray being in is great by itself.

One less thing to bitch about. Are we going to have some sort of party now?

I bet for the Ray side of things, people will still complain until the Apu trilogy is announced.

The AE is more than nice enough. I'd much rather we get stuff like The Music Room that is unavailable on DVD which seems to be what Criterion is thinking.

Can't say I saw a blu upgrade of Naked coming, but it shoud've been obvious with the release of Topsy-Turvy.

The important thing is that Beauty and the Beast on blu-ray is coming out in July. \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

That the Glass opera track is in 5.1 DTS-HD MA is great news in itself - day one release for me.

Fingers crossed it comes out in time for the Criterion sale, it would be hard to wait months more for that one

^ well don't the (hopefully) B&N sale end in early August every year? If so, you'll have time. I'm not waiting on June's People on Sunday unless it is confirmed a B&N sale will happen in July.

This is my first Criterion announcement since I moved to the UK. It didn't even occur to me that I'd have to wait until night to see it. Imagine my disappointment when I log in to see what the June titles are and realize it's only early morning in NY.

: : sigh : :

(and why do I even care, since I can't really rent them easily here…)

Hey, you can't rent them easily here anymore either, but now you presumably have much better access to MoC, BFI, and Second Run, so sounds like a step up to me. (Or has Lovefilm similarly started dropping the ball these days?)

There is absolutely no way Ryan just guessed Naked on Blu-ray. Stop being coy! Children hate it when their fathers are coy! (Erm, congrats BTW.)

Once I get my first UK credit card (and move out of my temporary apartment) I will definitely check out LoveFilm, and I intend to follow along the MoC and BFI releases as they come out. Better yet, I'll try to make regular visits to BFI Southbank, which I think pretty much blows away any of the Film Forum, BAMCinematek, PFA, and Walter Reade theatre. The only theater I'm really going to miss here is the beloved Castro Theatre. Though their programming really turned to shite a number of years back. Long gone are the days of a 2-week Greenaway/Truffaut/Antonioni marathon at the most glorious theater I've ever known. Or a double-feature of Alphaville and Blade Runner. :-/ But I digress…

Anyhow there's some combination of the volume of releases, the hype around the company, and the increasingly reliable quality of Criterion's output that's making it hard to not follow along, even if I'm not likely to watch that many of them.

Hmmm, I'm guessing Leon Morin, since we know that's coming at some point, and I doubt the next Melville on Blu otherwise would be anything other than Le samourai.
