Why did they cropout the sides?

It still looks like a Life Magazine cover.

judging from her knee, they really didn't. they just extended the red box containing the title.domino harvey wrote:Why did they cropout the sides?

I hate the new Makioka Sisters cover. It's the laziest, most boring cover I've seen in ages. The previous cover was far more interesting.

Say what you will about its Chip Kidd-ishness, the old Makioka Sisters cover was a much better and more interesting design than this new banality. Slapping a black band on the most overexposed publicity still the film has is incredibly lazy but seemingly happening more and more often with Criterion's designs. To be honest, I really liked the old one, and was very surprised by the outcry, especially when last month's announcements included the inauspicious arrival of what is by a long shot the worst cover in the collection (looking at you, Zazie).

Will quibble with the by a long shot part, but you may very well be right about it being the worst. Still have some serious contenders with those two Fuller covers.FerdinandGriffon wrote:...especially when last month's announcements included the inauspicious arrival of what is by a long shot the worst cover in the collection (looking at you, Zazie).

Criterion should just release blank white covers with the film title in courier text.

I really LOVE the Clowes covers for the two Fuller films. They were a huge improvement on the older releases. The worst covers are Heaven Can Wait, Howard's End and Canterbury Tale.fdm wrote:Will quibble with the by a long shot part, but you may very well be right about it being the worst. Much prefer the BFI cover of La belle et la bete to be honest; thrilled to see High and Low getting a blu release (It's my favourite Kurosawa so far).
