There is actually a whole list of Shindo films that Janus is showing at BAM.

Here.

Criterion does love films with "naked" in the title. It'd be the 6th....

True, although the only ones where the print isn't credited to someone else are Onibaba, Kuroneko, The Naked Island and Shindo's latest film Postcard.

Hi all

Do you think that there is a chance to see Blast of Silence on Blu Ray sooner or later?

I discovered this little gem 2 months ago, and it seems I can't forget about it, I just keep seing the whole movie running before my eyes when I shut them.

Remembering. Remembering.

Not as much as movies that start with the word "last". They are 8 in total.

I'm surprised they've only released seven titles with Samurai in the title. Bonus points though for one coming from outside Japan. Now they just need to get on those Chinese films with ninja inexplicably in the title.

There are 14 films with "Night" in the title. What do I win?

Still only one with "Symbiopsychotaxiplasm" in the title, though.

I was thinking Last Action Hero.

But seriously, I don't think we have to worry about Last House on the Left coming in the Criterion "Last" movies (same goes for Last Tango in Paris). Maybe The Last Detail. And of course, the one I want, The Last Movie will prob never be released in general.

I like to think he has a fake camera filled with alcoholic drinks around that time of his life and just chugging away. His cowboy hat is for the vomit.

Actually, I suggested the original 4 hour-long cut of Last Tango in Paris to John Mulvaney yesterday, and he said he'd run with the suggestion! I don't hold out much hope for Last House on the Left, though. :)

It's probably worth pointing out that NFDC who is where we have The Music Room from at the very least also have the rights to An Enemy of the People, Inner Eye, Rabindranath Tagore, Pather Panchali, The Home and the World, and The Visitor suggesting if Criterion will go back to Ray it will be through one of those.

For some reason, I thought that if Criterion was about to dive into the Ray back catalog they'd probably start with the ones that the Film Foundation helped restore. Is my thinking faulty here?

The rights issues and the restorations are mostly unrelated. If Criterion is to use the restorations they'll need permission from the rights holders to even release the film first. If any of the films I mentioned have been restored they are the likely next film.

Well, here's hoping it's not Enemy of the People, which is the worst film I've ever seen credited to an indisputably great filmmaker.

If there are different licensors for the Apu trilogy films, that might present Criterion with something of a headache!

It seems like Ray's estate owns The World of Apu and while it's harder to find who owns presently the second film it seems like it's a company called Epic Productions. NFDC also own THE MUSIC OF SATYAJIT RAY from Utpalendu Chakraborty that would likely make a great extra.
