That's awesome news! I can't wait. The Hustler is my second fave Newman film after Hud -- now, if only that would get a nice, deluxe SE treatment!

Exactly the same as the UK SE which came out a while ago.
I'm glad I waited, this is at a much better price.

I was looking forward to a commentary track for this movie, but seven commentators seems like about five too many. Give me one or two people who can comment in depth. I see an unfortunate opportunity for five people to tell each other how wonderful they are, followed by Schickel and Young telling us that the movie is a landmark of early 60's cinema verite' and black and white realism. Hope I'm wrong, because this is one great movie.

The Beaver indicates that this new SE is non-progressive. Is this correct, or did the Beaver get a bad copy?

Its prevented me from picking up this disc so far.

DVDbeaver review

Specs in subtitles differ in the reviews. When someone gets it, can you double check the sub options? Japanese as one request to check please.

FFC has a mixed verdict on the HD image
The Hustler's 2.35:1, 1080p transfer is entirely too smooth; while not as severely airbrushed as DVNR poster children Predator and Patton, the image lacks texture (fine detail proves frustratingly elusive) and depth--and, needless to say, grain, finally costing the gritty black-and-white picture some of its social-realist capital. Greyscale contrast is magnificient, however, and the source print is in pristine condition.
