Are we talking MSRP? I mean $50 once all is said and done. I guess that's $80 MSRP... So you're right on the money.matrixschmatrix wrote:Remember than an $80 price point generally means $50 if you buy it from Amazon and as low as $30 if you work the deals correctly. $40 is what Criterion charges for one Blu, $50 for one movie special edition (like Seven Samurai or Night of the Hunter.) They're certainly not going to charge that little for three big-name movies.

Yes, 'price point' refers to MSRP- otherwise, it's impossible to say what something costs, as actual price is in constant flux.

Sorry. I thought he meant what should he expect to shell out upon its release date. Either way, I'd say $40-50 and you've got the set.matrixschmatrix wrote:Yes, 'price point' refers to MSRP- otherwise, it's impossible to say what something costs, as actual price is in constant flux.

So, cdnchris posted the packaging photos of Naked and it seems it is now licensed from Film4 and not New Line. I guess that means no Blu-ray deal for the New Line titles was struck.

That's rather disconcerting. I expected it would herald the release of several Warner-licensed titles.dwk wrote:So, cdnchris posted the packaging photos of Naked and it seems it is now licensed from Film4 and not New Line. I guess that means no Blu-ray deal for the New Line titles was struck.
The new packaging photos also reveal that The Music Room has been licensed from The National Film Development Corporation of India. Oddly, it doesn't appear in their online catalog, but Pather Panchali and several other Ray films do.

Not to be random or anything, but I wouldn't mind another Claude Sautet title or maybe an Eclipse set with films like Les Choses de La Vie, Cesar et Rosalie, Une Histoire Simple, etc.

According to AV Maniacs, quoting Jim Clatterbaugh of Monsters from the Vault, regarding Island of Lost Souls:
I wasn't able to find the Clatterbaugh quote on Monsters from the Vault's webpage though.Greg Mank has recorded the audio commentary and there will be a talking heads documentary also. I expect there will be a formal announcement soon.

^^Co-sign. I've only seen Cesar et Rosalie, but love the opportunity to get more in R1.rrenault wrote:Not to be random or anything, but I wouldn't mind another Claude Sautet title or maybe an Eclipse set with films like Les Choses de La Vie, Cesar et Rosalie, Une Histoire Simple, etc.
Speaking of that era, can I also shout out Alain Tanner? I noticed some of his '80s work is in the MK2 catalogue link posted over in the FB/Twitter thread. None of his stuff is out on R1, although New Yorker did a bunch of videos in the late '90s. Eclipse would be a good solution, but I hope at least The Middle of The World and especially Jonah, Who Will Be 25 In The Year 2000 (one of my all-time faves) make the mainline. [-o<

I actually like Middle of the World best of the Tanner films I've seen. An Eclipse set with MofW and Jonah AND Salamandre (still no English-subbed DVD release anywhere of this) would be great.Arthur House wrote:Speaking of that era, can I also shout out Alain Tanner? Since we're bringing up forgotten Swiss directors, how about Claude Goretta? The Lacemaker, The Wonderful Crook, The Invitation and The Roads of Exile would make a great Eclipse set, though I'd prefer mainline Blus.

Max et les Férrailleurs is listed in the Rialto catalogue as a future release. Considering Rialto's relationship with Criterion, this is a strong possibility..rrenault wrote:Not to be random or anything, but I wouldn't mind another Claude Sautet title or maybe an Eclipse set ...

We can only hope that they are like the the many other titles found in this search engine (for example, Renoir's Elena and her Men, Godard's Made in USA or Breathless) that StudioCanal apparently doesn't have the US rights to....rrenault wrote:"This may be a problem"

Well Un coeur en Hiver and Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud I'm pretty sure SC doesn't have the US rights to. Un Coeur en Hiver is in print in the US right now and not through Lionsgate.

Speaking of which, I know someone in Brooklyn who has some great advertising materials from IoLS and would like to put her in touch with CC and Eureka...but no one has responded to my emails yet. Jon & Kevin...I'm just trying to help!

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
I wonder if Chris could tell us whether the film itself still begins with the Fine Line logo, as on the previous DVD, or has a FilmFour logo instead? That might also provide a further clue as to whether this is outside of a possible New Line/Warner deal.Jeff wrote:That's rather disconcerting. The Fine Line logo is missing and we get the Film4 logo instead.

Agreed about Middle of the World, and I think Messidor, A Flame in the Heart, and In the White City are also more accomplished than Jonah. I agree that Tanner is well overdue for some attention, and it's not as if he'd be that hard a sell. There are a number of reasonably well-known names in the films (Ogier, Berto, Ganz - but if they're timid about Rivette. . .); Jonah was an iconic film of the 70s, and there must some kind of residual audience for it even now; and you've got further marketable hooks for In the White City (gorgeous Lisbon) and Messidor (the film Thelma and Louise ripped off).

My favorite might be Messidor, but whatever. A Tanner Eclipse set would be perfect. Jonah, Messidor, White City, Salamandre, and Charles, Dead or Alive (the only one of these I haven't seen) were all released by New Yorker on VHS, so maybe that could be your Eclipse set if Criterion could snag those rights (if they haven't already).Perkins Cobb wrote:Agreed about Middle of the World, and I think Messidor, A Flame in the Heart, and In the White City are also more accomplished than Jonah. Yes, a Tanner Eclipse set would be great. My choices would be Messidor, Middle of the World, In the White City, A Flame in the Heart, plus The Journal of Lady M. (a very good variation on Flame), and Les Années Lumière/Light Years Away, a wonderful variation on the Icarus myth, with an excellent performance by Trevor Howard (shot in English).
A second Eclipse set could include Charles Dead or Alive, Jonas, No Man´s Land (excellent, w/ Terry Riley score), and possibly Requiem or La vallée fantome (seen neither but they have a good rep), alternatively The Man who Lost his Shadow (good but not excellent) or Fourbi (ditto).
Mainline release options: In the White City + No Man´s Land (alienation theme), Flame in the Heart + Journal of Lady M (emancipation and eroticism theme).

Which neatly puts the John Berger/Tanner films in one box. On the subject of Berger where oh where are his own films on DVD made with Mike Dibb and the Ways of Seeing TV series? Shame on you BBC. And if any forum member has not read the book Mummy will chastise you with the wire clothes-hangers.Michael Kerpan wrote:I actually like Middle of the World best of the Tanner films I've seen. If Criterion is planning on releasing Tanner's films, I'd prefer that they stack them with supplements. (Naturally.) Does it really seem like these will more likely than not be Eclipse series? (I hope not.)
