So do the boxsets (Hungarian Masters and Frantisek Vlacil) and Sentiment have spine numbers (a la Criterion)? A perusal of SR's page was inconclusive?

Just went and checked - The Hungarian Masters boxset is spine number 48 (while its films are 4, 24 and 25, just for completeness).

The Frantisek Vlacil Collection boxset arrived today - the box gets spine number 51 (and the films are numbers 17, 40, 41 and 55 for 'Sentiment').

Second Run are having an amazing year so far. I love this company.

Riverside Studios in Hammersmith are showing a Second Run double bill of The Cremator and Morgiana as part of the The New Czech Cinema 2010 season.

Fri 26 Nov The Cremator at 19:00 and Morgiana at 21:00. Both films for £10.00, a bargain!

Hi everyone,

I love the artwork on Second Run DVD's and have made a few wallpapers for Morgiana, Third Part Of The Night, Valley Of The Bees & Valerie And Her Week Of Wonders. They are in 1680x1050 only.

Of course, credit to Second Run's artist :)

Is there a chance that Second Run will reissue their older DVDs with new cover art designs to make them similar to the ones of all the latest DVDs?
I understand this might be a frivolous question to ask such a small independent label, but you everybody knows some collectors are real freaks…

I'm sure Bikey can answer this himself (with a "no", I'd assume), but I recall that when Second Run was set up, they made it clear that the cover template / treatments were intended to evolve over time. So the change in style was incorporated into their branding from the start.

And that includes the flipping of the colour bar on the spine, I presume, though I don't know if the two 'mistakes' in this regard (a top-side colour bar marooned amongst the bottoms and a bottom marooned amongst the tops) were intentional!

Thanks, Zedz, but as an anti-Darvinist would have put it: If so, then why ain't they keep evolving?..

It's great for us to know and hear that our cover art designs are appreciated by you.
We certainly always intended, as zedz says, our templates to continue evolving over time; and they will evolve, videozor, but we haven't as yet quite reached the place where we'd like to go next. Designs are still being considered...
Really hope that you are all still ok with our current cover design template?

My views on Second Run's covers scarcely need re-airing except to say that Szindbád will be a daunting act to follow - but is there any other label that routinely makes a point of displaying the film's original-language title in the same font, type size and prominence (aside from the differing colour) as the English-language one?

Thanks, Bikey! I really think that the current template is just great; that the older ones that started to pale in comparison...

MoC routinely foreground the original Italian, French, and German language title of the film and often entirely dispense with the English. Suck on that! :)

The rest of Mezsaros's trilogy was promised upon the release of Diary for My Children. When will we get word on them? I've seen it twice, and Adoption once, since its release, and I am itching to see more films from her.

Just a quick note to confirm that Second Run's stock was also destroyed in Monday's Sony warehouse arson, along with that of many other British independent labels.

So there may be short-term delivery delays while they work out the logistics of repressing everything - I suspect Bikey will pop up with more specific details.

Message in Second Run's latest newsletter:
Dear Friends,

We are sorry to inform you that Second Run has been affected by the public order disturbances that took place last week in the UK. In one terrible incident, Sony's main UK warehouse in north London was completely destroyed by fire. Sony is our distributor and so we, along with many other independent DVD and Music Labels, have now lost ALL of our existing DVD stocks. Thankfully, no one was injured in the fire.

This means that there are no Second Run DVD stocks at the moment to ship to retailers, and we will have to re-manufacture all our DVD titles and stocks again. Please bear with us and all the retailers / e-shops / wholesalers you normally use, as there will inevitably be a delay in meeting the demand for our DVDs. However, we do have some stock of almost all our titles kept at Second Run HQ and so please do place individual orders directly through our website; in fact, this would be very helpful to us in the current circumstances.

Our new release, István Szabó's Father (Apa), will now move to a new release date of 12 September. All new releases subsequent to Father are not affected and will be released as scheduled. From next week onwards we expect to begin gradually receiving our re-manufactured DVDs, so that by mid-September we hope to have replaced all of the titles and stock that was destroyed in the fire. We are grateful to Sony for the help they are providing with this.

Please be assured that we are NOT deleting any of our titles as a result of this fire. All the films in our Catalogue will continue to be available as soon as the re-manufactured stocks are in place.

We (and all the other Labels affected) will need your patience and support during this time. We are relying on your continued and, hopefully, increasing patronage of good cinema!

Many thanks.

I just want to point out that Amazon.uk's pre-order price of GBP13.99 for the Miklós Jancsó Box Set is ridiculous. Order you fools.

Yes, that has to be a misprice, so go for it!

Based on precedent, it'll be the three existing Jancsó DVDs exactly as released separately, but in a cardboard sleeve.

Two more Jancsós are being prepared - Red Psalm is imminent, and another one will follow shortly afterwards, which I believe will be an English-friendly video premiere.

Strange that the Jansco box set is going to overlap with the Hungarian masters box set.

I just ordered all the Jansco films in a big order of second run films I placed recently, so I guess it won't matter for me anyways.

Really excited to start exploring these films, almost the entire second run catalog is unknown to me, and after testing the waters with the Frantisek Vlacil set, finally decided to take the plunge and check a lot of these films out.

Second Run interview

#172 Post by Antares »

A friend of mine who works on DVDCompare.net asked me to post this here...
Rewind are holding a 'peoples' interview with Second Run for those interested:
We will shortly be holding an interview with Second Run, the independent distributor, but with a twist. What do Rewind users want to know about Second Run? Perhaps you would like to know about their plans for the future? Whether there are rights issues for titles you would like to see them release? Or just something more general.

E-mail your questions to [email protected] (with the Subject SECOND RUN INTERVIEW) and we will ask Second Run the pick of the crop for a feature piece on the company.

Be quick though, all questions should be with us by the 16th October!

Indeed - it's in development now. I'm writing the booklet essay on Night Train, Michał Oleszczyk is tackling Innocent Sorcerers, but I'm not sure about the other two.

And I'm very happy to confirm that all four transfers will be sourced from the recent Studio Kadr restorations - so unless you've bought any of the recent Gazeta Wyborcza DVDs (which I'm guessing is unlikely, as they're unsubtitled), they'll all be massive improvements on older Polish/Polart/Facets discs.

I also believe the discs will be made available separately.
