I think to some degree they're not helped by being put in a context with a bunch of dead serious movies- Four Feathers and Thief of Baghdad in particular are both more Prisoner of Zenda kind of things than they are Rules of the Game.knives wrote: Different Korda. I definitely prefer 4F to those films though even if it's still a wait until it's dead cheap type of purchase.

What are the odds of the Long Voyage Home? does anyone know? I just read The Making of Citizen Kane and saw that this is currently on Hulu...so I'm very interested

Are there different cuts of The Four Feathers? I could've sworn that it was over 2 hours. Anyway, pretty solid month despite having unexpected announcements. I actually really like the sounds of that Antonioni movie. It sounds reminiscent of Fellini's City Of Women, which I love.

You might be thinking of the remake.

The 2002 remake is over two hours, but I've never seen it and didn't know about it until just now. Everywhere I'm looking says the Korda version is over two hours. (129 Minutes)knives wrote:You might be thinking of the remake.
Thanks, though. Is this remake any good?
EDIT: Criterion's using the TCM print, which is a shorter print, apparently. (Frame Rate?)

I admittedly have a bias towards Heaven's Gate, but it just seems like a November film to me. I'm guessing that it will be announced along with the rest of Jeff's list. (The Soft Skin certainly has a chance, as well.)

Another Antonioni? #-o
It'll probably please a lot of people, but aside from a few titles - La Notte and L'Eclisse, mainly - I have a really hard time understanding all the praise.

If Fox were smart they would do their own barebones Tree of Life and let Criterion do a deluxe treatment. Considering it's low box office they could use every dime and plenty of people would double dip.swo17 wrote:Brazil wasn't really an upgrade, just a rerelease of Disc 1 from the set with an anamorphic transfer.
Tree of Life is already coming from Fox later this year.

I agree...he's pretty much an Italian Ed Wood.Der Spieler wrote:Another Antonioni?

I take it you are being sarcastic. Very funny. About as funny as your selling the MoC DVD of Kuroneko for 15$.

Considering what a risk it was from the start $10 mil isn't bad.Alan Smithee wrote:If Fox were smart they would do their own barebones Tree of Life and let Criterion do a deluxe treatment. I'm interested though in knowing exactly why everytime someone shows a little reserve towards a Great Director, somebody has to make a little remark discrediting their judgement.Tribe wrote:I take it you aren't interested then?Der Spieler wrote:I take it you are being sarcastic. I don't know if it happens every single time and I'm not certain that all such remarks are little...so I can't comment. But, if you are that sensitive, I apologize for hurting your feelings.Der Spieler wrote:I'm interested though in knowing exactly why everytime someone shows a little reserve towards a Great Director, somebody has to make a little remark discrediting their judgement.Tribe wrote:I take it you aren't interested then?Der Spieler wrote:I take it you are being sarcastic. It's coming, not sure in what context. As part of Eclipse 31: The Worst Films of John Ford, maybe?Drucker wrote:What are the odds of the Long Voyage Home? does anyone know? I just read The Making of Citizen Kane and saw that this is currently on Hulu...so I'm very interested

If you count the foreign gross ($23 mil!) it's already made its money back, and it's still playing in a fair number of theaters.knives wrote:Considering what a risk it was from the start $10 mil isn't bad.Alan Smithee wrote:If Fox were smart they would do their own barebones Tree of Life and let Criterion do a deluxe treatment. That's a totally unfair remark. Ed Wood movies are fun.Tribe wrote: I agree...he's pretty much an Italian Ed Wood.
Can you do an Eclipse set with 50 movies?Matt wrote:As part of Eclipse 31: The Worst Films of John Ford, maybe?

I think we really do need a "like" function on this forum. How much do I have to donate to make that happen?Matt wrote:It's coming, not sure in what context. Does anybody know what happened with A Man Escaped? It looked like a certainty a couple of years ago, but since recently is not even being mentioned in this thread...

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
I demand at least 5-disc Blu-ray boxset for November or December.
Also, I did some counting to see how many Blu-ray upgrades by spine number they have released. Their focus is on the first hundred obviously.
1-99 = 23
100-199 = 8
200-299 = 8
300-399 = 10
400-499 = 4

I think one of the reasons there are so many from the first hundred is that there are so many re-releases there- I think the only ones in that range where they put out a blu that was identical to the original DVD are Gimme Shelter and Charade.

Exactly. Most of the first hundred has been upgraded or still needs upgrades. Kwaidan, etc...

I think it's the same rightsholders as Baby Doll and I Married a Witch, isn't it?scotty2 wrote:Long Voyage Home? My favorite Ford. Toland does his usual great work and the O'Neill material is tailor-made for Ford. This would be a possibly under the same arrangement as Stagecoach, right?

The package includes Stagecoach, The Long Voyage Home, I Married a Witch, History is Made at Night, Foreign Correspondent, and To Be or Not To Be. These are the films owned by the estate of the late film collector Stanley Caidin, and this is the library that was licensed to Criterion by Julian Schlossberg's Westchester Films (née Castle Hill). Schlossberg also manages films the films owned by the Cassavetes estate (also currently licensed to Criterion) and the Kazan estate (not currently licensed to Criterion) among many others. It looks as though Schlossberg has now also licensed Breaker Morant to Criterion (though it's not part of the Caidin package)

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
Hold the phone! Where was this confirmed? is that the reason the blu went out of print so quickly? and should I go ahead and sell it while the price is so high? I know licensing doesn't guarantee a release anytime soon, if ever, but this would be a great addition to the collection. If you could elaborate at all I would greatly appreciate it.Jeff wrote:It looks as though Schlossberg has now also licensed Breaker Morant to Criterion (though it's not part of the Caidin package)
