Re: Artificial Eye
I was hoping Landscape would be one of the titles, it would be great if this isn't the only set they have scheduled.

Re: Artificial Eye
Based on precedent, the trilogy will almost certainly be a repackaging of the MK2 edition.eerik wrote:Will be interesting to see how Colours compares to Colors. AE's Veronique did not look too bad compared to Criterion's. One of the biggest differences of course will be the price.
As for the claim that AE's Veronique "did not look too bad"... well, MK2 made the film in the first place and the company is currently run by Nathanaël Karmitz, the son of the film's original producer, so I'd instinctively assume that they'd do at least as good a job as Criterion, if not better. Certainly, I have no complaints about the AE Blu-ray edition.

Re: Artificial Eye
It's called Volume 1, so if everybody here buys it we should see a Volume 2. This is fantastic news, since New Star only got to two of these films. With the four titles mentioned, maybe Travelling Players will have an improved transfer and be split over two discs - or maybe there's a disc of extras (god knows what)?Murdoch wrote:I was hoping Landscape would be one of the titles, it would be great if this isn't the only set they have scheduled.
Vol 2 speculation: Another two New Star updates (Landscape and Stork) coupled with two debuts (Alexander and Cythera). After that doesn't Artificial Eye have all the remaining features already in print?

I am lucky to have Alexander and Cythera from a Greek newspaper, but unfortunately for my non-Greek spreaking friends, they have no subs at all.zedz wrote:Vol 2 speculation: Another two New Star updates (Landscape and Stork) coupled with two debuts (Alexander and Cythera). Re: Artificial Eye
I have a feeling that the volumes will be in chronological order by decade, so volume 2 would include Alexander the Great, Voyage to Cythera and Landscape in the Mist, and maybe The Beekeepers just for completion's sake. And volume 3 would include Suspended Step of the Stork, Ulysses's Gaze, and Eternity and a Day. That's my guess, and I'm sticking to it.
My fingers are crossed for a Sembene collection next.

War and Peace (Bondarchuk) on Artificial Eye
DVD Beaver, in its Release Calendar, points to a new Artificial Eye DVD release of Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace on Oct. 10 of this year. Artificial Eye, of course, had a Region 2 issue of this title that is now OOP. Anybody know if this is simply a reissue of the old transfer (what I suspect) or, god help us, a new transfer from a highly unlikely new restoration? The Amazon.uk has it listed as a DVD, with no cover as yet...

Apparently Artificial Eye DVDs and BDs were inside the Sony warehouse destroyed by rioting.

I see that the article has now been corrected to attribute the THREE COLORS trilogy to Kieślowski instead of Tarkovsky!RossyG wrote:Apparently Artificial Eye DVDs and BDs were inside the Sony warehouse destroyed by rioting.

Re: Artificial Eye
Not just Artificial Eye - also BFI, Eureka, Second Sight and countless other independent labels.
They should (touch wood) be covered by Sony's own insurance, and everything should be replaceable (thankfully, masters are stored elsewhere), but there'll be unavoidable short-term delivery problems. Especially given that everyone will probably be trying to replicate their stock at the same time, using facilities that have already been booked out to other projects.

Oh well, that's what you get from deep spending cuts that target the poorest in society + bankers, market traders and politicians leading society into a black hole of selfishness and greed by example. Hopefully Sony were insured by Lloyds of London...

Re: Artificial Eye
Finally a release of Landscape that won't cost me an arm and a leg, hopefully they corrected the playback issue on Beekeeper (with my disc it would return to the main menu after reaching a certain point in the film, a few others reported this as well)

Re: Artificial Eye
Which leads me to assume that there will be a Volume 3 - Artificial Eye released Ulysses' Gaze and Eternity and a Day in cinemas and on VHS. My guess is this will be either a three-disc set with those two The Suspended Step of the Stork (which will mark its first UK commercial release) or a five-discer with Trilogy: The Weeping Meadow and The Dust of Time. Or maybe those last two and the third of the Trilogy will be a separate set.ellipsis7 wrote:Angelopoulos Vol. 2 on November 7th...

I saw Landscape in the Mist, Ulysses' Gaze and Eternity and a Day in the cinema, the latter two in the company of a Greek friend who explained some of the symbolism to me. Alexander the Great was shown on Channel 4 in its very early days (just checked - 1984) but I didn't stay up for it. Those were the days when Channel 4 could show a four-hour subtitled film at 9pm. I wonder how many people watched it?

Re: Artificial Eye
The November / early December titles listed on Amazon look to be:
Theo Angelopoulos Collection Vol. 2 [November 7th]
Ivan the Terrible [November 21st] [N.B. Play.com is listing this as 2 discs]
Dersu Uzala [November 21st] - New transfer? Their last release was pretty sketchy so I would love this to be sans nausea inducing colour fluctuations.
Come and See [November 21st]
The Big Picture [November 21st]
Salt of Life [December 5th]

Please don't bother on my account, Artificial Eye. A 2D blu ray would do just fine.

Re: Artificial Eye
Well since the German Blu-ray 3D/2D set is coming out at the end of the month, I guess the UK shouldn't be far behind. I just hope some more extras could be announced, like the commentary and making-of on the German release.

You are totally on the money, GaryC. Play.com have up now The Theo Angelopoulous Collection Vol.3 for a December 5th release, containing The Suspended Step of the Stork, Ulysses' Gaze, Eternity and a Day, The Weeping Meadow and The Dust of Time. \:D/GaryC wrote:Which leads me to assume that there will be a Volume 3 - Artificial Eye released Ulysses' Gaze and Eternity and a Day in cinemas and on VHS.
