Absolutely not, but Matt was apparently frittering away the day on unimportant stuff. He just needed to refocus.

A forum member on mubi.com posted a few weeks ago that Criterion had a Chris Marker Eclipse set coming out soon with 12 films. (I guess most will be shorts?) I assume it will be out in February as well. Makes sense to put that out at the same time they upgrade Sans Soleil if both projects are indeed in the works.

Cine//B Film Festival in Chile is having a rather large Marker retrospective titled: Foco Pirata: 1D 7H 43M Chris Marker.

Would be great if that Eclipse were true. Fingers crossed.

If it is San Soleil, then it will be the third time to buy it for me...

Bought the Criterion disc, which was stolen from my workplace before I could actually watch "La Jetee".
Re-bought the Criterion last year.

That is if I decide to upgrade it....

Ryan seems to think it's Rashomon in which case I'm glad I get to save twenty bucks in Feb.

Don't think it'll be Rashomon (looks far too epic). It's most likely a reissue of Inagaki's Samurai Trilogy....

Wasn't Throne of Blood hinted at for an upgrade?

It doesn't look like Rashomon to me either; Samurai Trilogy is plausible, but the color scheme (lack thereof) makes me wonder. This is definitely wishful thinking on my part, but it could reasonably be Gosha's Three Outlaw Samurai.

I was thinking Hidden Fortress myself, although that doesn't quite feel right either. Definitely doesn't look like Rashomon, since if it was I assume Mifune would be front and center, but he only wore peasant rags in that movie which is not what it looks like the central figure is wearing.

BTW, what are we even looking at here? Is this a guy on a horse, holding out a sword? Or am I over-Rorschaching it?

That's what I'm getting out of it, but I'd be interested in other possible interpretations.

Definitely a guy on a horse holding out a sword...

(Also AnimEigo's version of Inagaki's Samurai Banners officially goes out of print at the end of this month...)

It looks like a battle scene (duh). Isn't there a battle near the sea in the "Hoichi the earless" segment of Kwaidan?

That's an interesting thought -- and with bluray.com recently listing a Criterion release of Kwaidan on their site, that makes a lot of sense.

I didn't mean to imply that I thought the image was for Rashomon, just that I really wanted that in 2012. I should have written more about it. I would also be happy with a Blu-ray of Throne Of Blood, or this 47 Ronin that everyone is mentioning.

Which 47 Ronin is everyone mentioning? Mizoguchi? There's a 2 disc SD Madman out of Oz that looks decent. Don't know if the original elements are up to Blu or not.

The elements are up to Blu if Hulu is anything to go by.

An action scene on a cover for Mizoguchi's 47 Ronin would be highly misleading.
