So I just got my The Lady Vanishes Blu-ray and there's a disturbing development - the plastic from the shrinkwrapping is now glued to the spine (like old WB DVD releases) - making it look generally crappy, etc etc

Try a heat gun or hair dryer on a lower setting. If that doesn't work, there's a product called Goo Gone that I've used to remove various adhesives from cases. Remove the BD, booklet and sleeve first.mfunk9786 wrote:So I just got my The Lady Vanishes Blu-ray and there's a disturbing development - the plastic from the shrinkwrapping is now glued to the spine (like old WB DVD releases) - making it look generally crappy, etc etc

I've seen that on a few Criterions before, most recently on my copy of The Fallen Idol.mfunk9786 wrote:So I just got my The Lady Vanishes Blu-ray and there's a disturbing development - the plastic from the shrinkwrapping is now glued to the spine (like old WB DVD releases) - making it look generally crappy, etc etc

triodelover: Have you used that method for the plastic that sticks to the spine? I'm afraid I'll melt the plastic that's supposed to be part of the case at the same time as the plastic that isn't.

Try the old painter's trick of slowly peeling it back while breathing directly on the part you're peeling off

Yes, but hold the gun 10" -12" away and start with the lowest setting. You just want to warm it enough to make it pliable and easy to pull off. Heat is how it got there to begin with.mfunk9786 wrote:triodelover: Have you used that method for the plastic that sticks to the spine? If you've got any type of small vise to stabilize the case and steady that would help. Otherwise put LQ to work. Tweezers/forceps may help if the pieces are very small. If there's any residue left, go for the Goo Gone (my local Ace hardware affiliate has it).

I have had this happen a few times.mfunk9786 wrote:So I just got my The Lady Vanishes Blu-ray and there's a disturbing development - the plastic from the shrinkwrapping is now glued to the spine (like old WB DVD releases) - making it look generally crappy, etc etc

I'm dealing with nothing but residue at this point and I have no way of grasping onto it. Fuck this noise.

Is there a list anywhere of the different cover artists that post blogs about their design process? I've seen Erik Skillman's and Sam Smyth's, but would be interested in seeing some others as well.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
So Tokyo Drifter was wrapped in the pliable Saran Wrap-ish plastic but Branded to Kill was wrapped in that that crinkly plastic that is heat-adhered to the spine (and permanently ruins the spine regardless of whether or not you can peel it all off). Criterion: your Blu-ray packaging was perfect. Please make this stop.

Normally I would think you were being incredibly petty and ridiculous, but I hate that too. I usually switch cases with a film I like less when the wrap sticks to the spine but with the Criterion cases you can't really do that.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I mean, it's such a simple thing on Criterion's part that goes a long way, considering that the spines are the only thing you're looking at 99% of the time.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I don't really think Criterion chose for that to happen...
It seems more of an unfortunate contracting decision.
I just got the Addams Family complete set and it has opened versions of
the three previously released sets with the shit on the spine and one of
those flat white anti-theft things over the UPC. The cases have stickers
on top so obviously someone just tore off the plastic slapped a sticker
on it and put it in a box, and to make it worse there is another one
of those evil stickers on the inside of each case which holds 3 discs.

Why do you
format your posts
like this?
I don't intend to be rude, but it is a bit odd.

Haiku!
It's a habit I developed from having small screens that didn't show all of the available information. Is it particularly annoying? Or, just a question? I'll try to stop if it annoys people.

I can't remember the last time I was so jazzed for a main line boxset.
