I'm currently editing my short film about Edinburgh: it's not a documentary though it may well have educational value. It's my love letter to my city and hopefully it'll show people a different side of the city. It's probably going to be about 20-25 mins long, and it's divided into chapters, one of them about famous Scots born and raised in Edinburgh who made a vital contribution to Scotland's history, and a chapter about nature and landscapes in and around the city. There won't be acting in it, but a friend of mine has written poetry for the film and will be providing the voiceover. Once I have finished editing, I need to pay the various labels for using their records of classical music; hopefully that won't be too expensive.

I'm going to submit the film to the Cannes Short Film Corner (not eligible for the Competition as it's over 15 mins, their required length) and if it's accepted, I'm going to go to Cannes in May and see if I can interest some international buyers. I'll also submit the pic to the Edinburgh, Sydney and Soho Film Festivals and then post the film online in July or August (if nobody takes it, it'll go online in late May). The title is The Poet Dreaming Of The City Of Light.

A couple of films I worked on will be screening on January 26 in Portland, OR via the Northwest Film Center. I co-directed Rehearsal for the Wreck with my friend Jane Ballou, and I was DP on The Space Between by Gabe Van Lelyveld. I haven't seen any of the other films screening, but they're all made by great people.

Finished editing THE POET DREAMING OF THE CITY OF LIGHT a few weeks ago, submitted it to the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cannes (Short Film Corner, Director's Fortnight, Critics Week), Sydney Film Festival and the Rushes Soho Shorts Film Festival. Won't know for another six weeks or so if I get invited anywhere. Would love to be in the lineup for Edinburgh at least since the film is about the city. Currently busy designing the cover artwork for the eventual BR and DVD release. It's also going to be viewable on Vimeo. Not sure about YouTube yet since I don't like the idea of splitting it up into 3 parts (it's 29 minutes long).

A wee teaser (59 seconds) is on Youtube now.

Please share with friends and family if you like what you see. Cheers.

Help support my new documentary "Son of Lucifer" (2012)?!

#330 Post by paranoid-knight2008 »

Son of Lucifer is a very personal documentary focusing intensely on three generations in my family: myself, my mother, and her parents. The film is going to be brutally hard to bring forth, but something I feel very important to tell. A tapestry of stories from a variety of people that focus ideally on a supernatural and unexplained series of events circling around my family and a brutal cold case crime in their hometown back in 1977. My intent is to focus in on all of us individually, the stories told by those close to us, and ultimately peering further into the holes in this complicated history of ours. One that is so strange it feels like a horror story.

The reason I’m asking for help is because I want this to be told. I’ve made amateur, no-budget films before and share them virally for no-profit, but if there’s one story I want to actually put out into the world – it is this one. I need help for the traveling of my film – as I will be returning to my family’s hometowns and shooting there – as well as money to help pay for festival submission fees. Another thing I need help with is transferring the vintage VHS home videos of my family to digital files for the sake of editing them alongside freshly shot footage.

Help make this happen, guys. I’m not asking for a whole lot, just a little, and I know it’s enough to put this out there in the way I want to tell it. No donation is too little. The depths this story goes will surely not disappoint, and I promise to deliver it to you as raw as I possibly can.

Help out by pledging (and getting prizes) or even by spreading the word here: 8-[

FG, I wish you all good luck with getting this financed in one way or another (myself, I'm still waiting to hear if The Poet.. got invited to the Edinburgh Film Festival, should know by 18 May at the latest; if the EIFF falls through, I've also submitted the short to Jameson Cinefest in Hungary, a short film fest in London and Rutger Hauer's fim fest in Milan, I've Seen Films). If EIFF doesn't happen for me, I'll put the film online and sell as many BD and DVD units as I can. Will update once I have more to tell.

Anyway: if you don't meet your target on Kickstarter, you may want to consider indiegogo and pick flexible funding. That way, you get to keep what people have donated after the deadline expires even if the target is not met. Indiegogo will, however, then take a 9% charge instead of a 4% (if target was met). Have a look at it anyway if you haven't done so already.

Thanks, Finch. Best of luck with The Poet.
We're pushing it with time, so I don't think Indiegogo is in the cards, but thankfully I think our Kickstarter is going to make it (fingers crossed and knock on wood, of course).

Could use any and all last minute help though!

I've given up submitting my short film LINES to festivals - it was a fun experiment to do and its lack of refinement is a direct result of the unorthodox shooting method, but that lack of refinement will still disqualify it from any festival selection. So if anyone is curious I have it up at Vimeo along with a description of the production 'experiment' - the password is "beefilm".

We sadly didn't get into EIFF. They had over 1100 short film submissions and we didn't make the cut though the rejection letter couldn't have been nicer saying that many worthy films had to be omitted. So, onwards.. Have to discuss the matter with my collaborators but it's safe to say that we'll put THE POET... on distrify and vimeo within the next 2 months. It may still get into Avanca, Hungary or Milan later this year.

We've started filming our next project, THE RED HAT. This time, my friend, Cindy Scott, who wrote the poetry for THE POET..., is directing. I'm the Director of Photography and editor again, as well as taking care of the artwork for the eventual BD & DVD release. THE RED HAT has one lead actor and two supporting actors as well as various voiceover parts. It is about a loner who finds that he has an alter ego, and this discovery leads to, as cliched as this sounds, a journey of self-discovery. Except for the final shot, the film is confined to interior shooting which is an interesting challenge after THE POET which was mostly filmed outdoors. We plan to submit THE RED HAT to Toronto and Venice if short films are eligible. Once THE RED HAT is complete, we plan to start writing my first feature film screenplay from June to October, and then while we're looking for financing, prep and shoot a third short film (my second as Director) in the autumn.

THE POET DREAMING OF THE CITY OF LIGHT

The Distrify page for the film is finally online. You can stream the film as a rental (I believe it's 30 days), download and keep the film in SD & HD, and buy the Blu-Ray or DVD. If you like the film, please share with your family and friends.

One of my shorts is playing at EFF Portland this week (Thursday to be exact), if any of the Portland-area members want to come out and see what's happening. I'll be attending all the screenings so feel free to come up and say hello.

To those of you interested in live TV broadcasts (the 1 or 2 of you), I am making one myself. I know the admins frown upon promotion, but I didn't want to post it on the facebook and see it get lost amid posts for BADLANDS or MOONRISE KINGDOM, so I'm posting it here first. I would love to hear thoughts, if nothing else. By the way, these won't be kinescopes, so never fear. We're exporting HD, in case anyone's curious.

A very good friend of mine is trying to get a thriller in Germany financed. His short film Cowboy won the Iris Prize in Cardiff a few years back. Till's a very talented bloke and I think THE SAMURAI is worth supporting.

Here is a video I did of the first Speed of Light show on Arthur's Seat a few days ago. Came out reasonably well, I think.

After the original Speed of Light video became the most popular clip of mine on YT, I went back on Arthur's Seat for another event and did this second video which I think is a good deal more visually interesting than the original.

They also started test fireworks as the sun was going down over Edinburgh Castle so I filmed that as well.

If you like these, please share them! Thank you

I'm trying to get a little short film showcase put together to air on the local public access station and wanted to put the call out to all you CF'ers out there. If you're interested in having some of your work seen by a completely random group of folks, get in touch. Thanks in advance!

Help /Film Raise $10K for FilmAid to benefit African Refugee

#348 Post by CR2 »

(I apologize if this is in the wrong place, but I wanted to post it somewhere on the forum (a mod can feel free to move it if desired) to draw attention to it and I figure that since modern filmmaking is one of the end goals of this organization it fits this subforum)

-------------------------------------------

/FIlm is attempting to raise $10,000 for the Filmaid charity to African refugee camps in Kenya. Find out how to donate at the following link and if they raise the full amount they will do a 10 HOUR marathon podcast/telethon.

Learn more about the charity in the following video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM1HzLVH7R8#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;!
The first reaction most people have to an organization like FilmAid is, “Why film?” Why spend money bringing film to a place that desperately needs water, food, and other necessities? The reason is that in such a challenging environment, film can be a critical source of information on health and safety issues, from HIV and cholera to gender-based violence. It can save lives. And perhaps just as importantly, it can provide a medium for refugees to connect with their own humanity, escape the trauma of their past and ease the purgatory of their present. In technical terms, this is called “psychosocial relief” – but we know it as simply “the magic of the movies.”

All funding that you donate will go straight to FilmAid’s program in the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya. Dadaab is the largest refugee camp in the world now with over 400,000 refugees from Somalia as a result of on-going famine and political insecurity. The famine crisis reached its worst in the summer of 2011, when thousands crossed the border into Dadaab every day.

In Dadaab, the three main programs that FilmAid runs are

1) screening educational and inspirational films whether on a giant screen on the side of a truck or on a television set

2) working with refugee communities and humanitarian agencies to produce media for the camp including including films, radio, and newspapers, and

3) training young refugees in filmmaking and storytelling. These three programs are outlined here. All the money you donate will fund this important work.

I believe in the importance and the transformative power of well-told stories. Together, we can help refugees in Dadaab tell their stories to the world, and enjoy the power of movies. If every person who listens to the /Filmcast donated just $1, we’d have more than enough money to meet our goal. I hope that you’ll join us and donate today.
==================

This film was made by people at the camp itself.

Since Seltzerberg (the auteurs behind Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans) can get studio backing by showing no effort whatsoever, I've decided to jump on their bandwagon, and write the treatment for Malick Movie. I expect a studio offer by tomorrow, sadly.
