Well, I initially didn't really like the Short Cuts cover, but that all changed when I saw the inside of the slipcase. It all goes together superb. So maybe I'll feel the same about Kagemusha. I hope.

I like the cover. Besides it goes with the movie, Kagemusha (Shadow Warrior) the image of two shadows, the king and his imposter. It may not be well executed, but at least it's well thought.

I do like The Battle of Algiers, it had a nice presentation. And the Youth of the Beast cover looks cool and appropriate to the film, which is one of Suzuki's more conventionally-mounted productions. The cover has a stark, raw edge and a directness, both of which the film has. I'm not so crazy about the Fighting Elegy cover, whose design looks convuluted in the extreme.

But the Kagemusha cover looks like it was designed by the same guy on the same day as the Suzuki ones. The serif lettering seems to make it look like a Shakespeare production, and the image, while well thought-out, doesn't at all demonstrate the vibrant color scheme of the movie. Which is just too bad.

Oh, and now that I think of it, I do like the Fanny and Alexander covers. It's just the more recent ones that suck so bad.

I just have to say that all of the cover art for Feb. looks great. The 3 that are up now are fantastic; Criterion seems to be getting more and more creative with their covers.

what a huge month... I love all the covers. I wonder if the Night and The City is a cashin on the recent Sin City craze? If so, kudos to Criterion.

Wow, what a turnaround with the new covers. Night and the City is a perfect cover. Can't wait for Thieves Highway to go up.

Really though, it goes in waves. Check through your collection, your favourite covers might just be the work of the same designer. There are a few Criterion regulars that are, IMO, better than the others.

Mbalson is so right, La Commare secca's cover is great.

I hope we get a really Pulpy, porno mag feeling type of cover for My Own Private Idaho, that would be SO fab.

OK OK, I know I am posting over myself....

but I have been curious to ask if there is a way to tell from the CC's website if a new release is going to be a crappy keepcase or a smart new slipfoldy cute cardboardy thingie (please feel free to tell me the actual name of these at any point)

so anybody know how or if there is a way to determine this before getting the new release in the mail or at the shop?

although your term is more fun, the offical designation is a "digipak".

as for working it out in adavnce of actual release, im not sure. Sometimes dvd retailers or news sites list the type of packaging.

It looks like a mock cover, but that is one of the worst cover and font i've ever seen for a dvd.
