It's cool that he finally got a chance to play a bad-ass on this show, as opposed to the more withdrawn and weak characters he's done in movies and on other shows. He was also great as Paul Newman's friend in Nobody's Fool, and in Heavy which was James Mangold's first film I believe.

I normally loathe reality tv, but if you're a trivia buff in any way, Pawn Stars is actually a lot of fun. Fairly meaningless, when all is said and done, but unfailingly interesting.

That's the first character I always associate him with.

He's done some good turns as a guest star on other network shows, including the too-short-lived Andre Braugher medical drama Gideon's Crossing and as a housebound morbidly obese epicurean on House.

And I agree, it was fun seeing him play a lethal wiseass.

NY Times review of Leonard's new novel Raylan

My wife and I just finished watching season two yesterday, and the final two episodes were so compelling (and even wrenching) that we decided to begin watching season 3 on amazon prime. Season 1 was indeed enjoyable, but the show really does dramatically improve in season 2.

Season 3 of Justified really came off with a bang, and further cements Raylan Givans as the most bad-ass character on TV today.

I take that back, it's a tie between him and Boyd Crowder. Especially after the way last night's show ended...damn.

Not that his performance as a powdered donut in Live Free or Die Hard often comes to mind while watching Justified, but I thought it was amusing that Raylan's method of disposal last week was how Olyphant's own character got offed by Bruce Willis

They better not ever kill off Jere Burns. He has become the unqualified master of the blank stare of bewildered disbelief-- I'd love to see him survive and become the big heavy in Season Four

He's been great on Breaking Bad (a rather blanket statement concerning nearly any part of that show), and hope his character returns for the final season.

But yes, I hope Wynn survives this season. His bewildered disbelief as you so perfectly put it was cranked up to 11 during that bar scene from this week's show.

I've had the same thought. Burns has been playing this beautifully. That "fell on deaf ears" remark fractured me. There is always a wonderful coexistence of (dark and droll) humor and the potential for a sudden outbreak of horrifying violence on this show.

I really look forward to the day somebody writes a Philip Baker Hall in Hard Eight/Robert Forster in Jackie Brown type of role for Burns. I refuse to believe that Greedy is the best the big screen has to offer him.

Daaaamn, everything's coming together for one crazy clusterfuck in the next two episodes to close out the season. Gotta love Michael Ironside and Adam Arkin showing up (prep for Season Four, I wonder?) and be still my heart with that Wynn Duffy as Number One in Harlan carrot being dangled!

It was pointed out in the AV Club comments board that Adam is sounding more and more like his dad now. Disappointed it wasn't Ian McShane, though.

Duffy's forming an alliance with Boyd was an especially nice touch. Both have mellowed considerably since their S1 gunshot wounds (Duffy even drinks tea now, for chrissakes: he's got the composure that Quarles was so desperately lacking all season long), and would represent a nice balance of big city/hillbilly villainy for S4 if their partnership persists.

I too enjoyed seeing Adam Arkin pop up in front of the camera. He's not new to the show, though, having directed 5 episodes in all. Never knew he was related to Alan Arkin!

I recently gave the first season a try, and while I liked the pilot and the development of that storyline, I wasn't crazy about the format of the show. (I think I'm just over episodic TV in general, at least when it comes to dramas.) Did the second season follow a similar mold?

I'm finally all caught up on this show and am really glad I kept on with it. It almost exclusively focuses on the main characters at this point, and you couldn't ask for a better ensemble cast.

Well, that was a series of anti-climaxes. Too many stupid mistakes on the part of characters who know better. Hope the finale ties everything together. Didn't realize until probably last week that they intend to keep Limehouse around past this season (though this could be famous last words on my part)
