Re: TCM Vault Collection
Only safe bet is catching them in time via pre-order, really-- not even Movies Unlimited knows the difference in stock. Ie if you want the Bogart set, get it now

Damn, I was afraid of that. Guess I'll be getting that Bogart set sooner rather than later.

I don't know that it's quite that dire -- eventually they will switch to DVD-rs, but I ordered the Audie Murphy set and two of the double features a couple of months after they were released, and scored real DVDs on all of them.

Interesting...Jeff wrote:UPA Jolly Frolics – This amazing DVD set includes, for the first time ever, 38 cartoons created by United Productions of America (UPA) and originally distributed by Columbia Pictures. The Jolly Frolics series began in 1949 with Ragtime Bear, which introduced audiences to the hilariously myopic Mr. Magoo. Included in this set are the Academy Award-winning cartoon Rooty Tooty Toot (1952) and the Oscar-nominated Madeline (1952) and Christopher Crumpet (1953). This set includes an abundance of bonus features, including introductions and audio commentaries by film historian and critic Leonard Maltin, who has written extensively on the history of animation. Street date: early 2012.

I emailed customer service at the TCM site and they said that the only releases on DVD-R are the ones under Universal, so supposedly the RKO, Bogart and the Jean Arthur sets are pressed.Perkins Cobb wrote:I don't know that it's quite that dire -- eventually they will switch to DVD-rs, but I ordered the Audie Murphy set and two of the double features a couple of months after they were released, and scored real DVDs on all of them.

From what I've read in the past (and feel free to prove me wrong), but I don't think the RKO Lost and Found set EVER had pressed discs.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Well, then disregard the information above. I was suspicious since he said, "only the Universal line is DVD-R" and he failed to acknowledge the obviously MOD Warner Archive, which is listed under the TCM Vault on the site.

The Jean Arthur set has been changed to "backorder" status. Damn. [At least on Movies Unlimited. It still seems to be in stock at TCM]

Universal doesn't tell them when they switch to burned discs, or even that they doMurdoch wrote:I emailed customer service at the TCM site and they said that the only releases on DVD-R are the ones under Universal, so supposedly the RKO, Bogart and the Jean Arthur sets are pressed.Perkins Cobb wrote:I don't know that it's quite that dire -- eventually they will switch to DVD-rs, but I ordered the Audie Murphy set and two of the double features a couple of months after they were released, and scored real DVDs on all of them.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Okay, so my Bogart set arrived today and I have good news and bad news. The good news is that for the first time ever (will, maybe the Jean Arthur set had one too), the digipak comes with a slipcover-- you know, like a normal digipak release. So that's nice. What's less nice is that it features Universal's "Worst Packaging Ever" disc holders from the original Back to the Future and the Office Seasons 5-6 Blus. So, get practicing!

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Looks like the next Universal set after the Dietrich set will be Joel McCrea westerns on April 2, which now has a pre-order listing on both TCM's shop and Movies Unlimited. Seems like this rumored list might be right after all.
For what it's worth, Movies Unlimited's pre-order is $5 cheaper than TCM's at the moment.

No Ramrod? That hurts. One of the greatest Westerns and my personal favourite of Veronica Lake's performances.

Although there's still some justified head-scratching among western aficionados regarding the lineup of the Joel McCrea set.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
Ok, so my Marlene Dietrich set arrived today. I followed Domino's guidance and downloaded VLC and have got a couple screen captures that I think pretty closely approximate a couple DVD Beaver captures. So ... sorry to be dense, but how do I get them on here? And I'm supposed to put them in a reply, right? Not in some specially designated image capture thread?
I will say that my initial impression is that these look great. Dishonored appears to be a UCLA print. I think it is a major improvement over what is shown on DVD Beaver. Shanghai does not appear to be UCLA sourced. I think it is also an improvement, but not as significant. But I think it looks solid.
I've never seen either of these films before, and just flipping through to get screen captures, I was gasping. Amazing images, I think looking nice & crisp. A shame these aren't being put out on blu. Any chance MOC has access to these through their deal? That would be AMAZING.
Still have to poke around and look at the extras.
The set I got looks pressed to me, but as I understand it, it sounds like they press a number they know they can sell & then it is MOD after that.

It's been awhile since I've seen my copy, but that does look ever so slightly better than the R2.

Re: TCM Vault Collection
The R2 release I have is cut. David, do you remember if we are missing out on any insert reaction shots? Or is it a long take like it appears? The missing dialogue seems pretty unimportant, really, but I wouldn't want to be missing out on a good closeup!!
I have the published screenplay/continuity, I forget where the cut starts exactly but here's the relative section. Feel free to remove it mods if this is breaking the rules! It's not the same as having the missing footage, but it's nice to know what exactly we're missing:
Chang: How long have you been in the French army?
Lenard in French: For twenty years. Twenty years. Twenty years, mademoiselle
Change looking closely at Lenard's passport: Your passport says nothing about your military rank.
Lenard in French, looking around bewilderedly: I don't understand.
Lily in French: He says that your passport says nothing about your being in the army.
Lenard in French: I am no longer in it. I have been retired.
Lily to Chang: He claims he has been retired.
Chang to Lily: Explain to him if he does not tell the truth, I'll have him shot.
Lily to Lenard in French: He says that if you do not tell him the truth, he will have you shot.
Lenard in French, suddenly looking very sheepish: When I was in the army I committed a minor offence and was discharged.
Lily to Chang: He was discharged for a minor offence.
Chang: Then why does he wear the uniform.
Lily in French, to Lenard: Why do you wear the uniform, then?
Lenard in French, very uncomfortable: I'm going to see my sister and I don't want her to know that I have been discharged. It would cause her too much shame and sorrow.
Lily: He is going to visit his sister and he doesn't want her to know about his disgrace.
