Spoiler
Very excited (if it's actually coming) for Samurai Trilogy, considering the DVDs make the original Suzukis look reference-quality.

Out of curiosity, what did you like about Things To Come? I tried watching it on DVD a few months ago and found the film extremely frustrating and felt it really didn't deliver for me.
As someone whose currently working on a paper concerning the relative semantics of taste judgments, I should preface my remarks by saying that I don't believe that any film has the property of being great/good/bad/awful/etc. There's only, as you said, what we like about them--an entirely subjective matter. Consequently, I can only tell you what I enjoyed about the film, but wouldn't pretend for a moment that that translates into anything objective even if my language might imply it.

So, what did I like about it? I suppose its the wide utopian fantasy of Wells himself (although, it should be noted that he hated the film as I believe that he hated every cinematic adaptation of his works that occurred during his lifetime). Sure the acting is as stilted as any sci-fi film of its day, but it is a film about ideas, about the path that humanity has before itself, that leads both to its own destruction and its own redemption. I don't want to make it sound as if Wells deserves all of the credit for the film's success. Korda and his production team did a hell of a job here too. The final act in particular stand out to me as one of the most beautifully realized visions of the future that we have from cinema's golden age.

I hope that this helps, as I'm not really sure what else to say. I'd also recommend checking out Christopher Frayling's BFI Companion to the work. I read it a few months after seeing the film and found it quite informative.

I don't remember the circumstances under which I tried watching the film, but I know I was excited about it. Really, what kept putting me off was that you would get to know a group of people, and then they'd be gone, and so on and so forth. The sets were excellent and the acting wasn't annoying or anything...but I just felt the movie was repetitive and couldn't make it through the whole thing. I'll revisit one day, likely, but probably not soon.

If the Ray films come about as often as the Chaplins could we be seeing Charulata or another film soon? Autumn Afternoon is great news, but I'd rather they release another eclipse or Only Son/There Was a Father esque twofer set.

in the eclipse line it's currently the longest layoff between japanese releases since the line started, so I imagine the next eclipse (this month or next) will be a japanese set.

The Samurai Trilogy's box and price has gone from the page so I'd imagine that will be announced soon.

Remember when they used to comfortably make the announcement around 2-4pm est? Seems it gets later and later with each month.

Have they even confirmed that they're announcing today? Usually on Facebook we get the "We'll be announcing later this week/tomorrow/in a few hours/shortly" progression, but I don't remember seeing any of that this week.

Until then, we'll be celebrating the birth of David Cronenberg.

No kidding. I even looked at my news feed before I posted that and still missed it. I guess that's what I get for trying to keep up with almost 50 friends!

Oh well, happy birthday David.

I imagine the Harold & Maude delay might be responsible for the slight delay today. Something like that would effect your disc replication schedule, which would effect your release schedule for other titles, which may have affected a title they were originally going to announce today.

The individual titles don't show up in the DVD listings main page, either. This is clearly getting upgraded, and I'm ecstatic.

It's my birthday today, too. (Never realized I shared it with Cronenberg before).

It is of course also possible that the films are gradually being erased from existence. Happy birthday!

To use my favorite Cronenberg quote, and it's never been more appropriate, "A birthday is a special occasion."

I haven't seen the film in a while, but as we know it's coming in the next couple of announcements... is that still of the fingers from The 39 Steps?
