It has been a year of excellent Blu-ray annoucements, that's for sure. It will be great to finally get our hands on this. I've only been waiting a couple of years but it seems to have been upcoming (due to the restoration) for six or seven years.Drucker wrote:2012 the year amazing releases were consistently announced in case the world ends.peerpee wrote:DIE NIBELUNGEN will be out before Xmas, and there is other activity taking place which is very exciting.

So it will be a bluray release to boot. The long wait was definitely worth it.peerpee wrote:It will be spine #40.

We're pushing for MURIEL this year, and will know more in a few days. If the lab hasn't gone under.

I watched Yi Yi last night and was blown away. I would love it if MoC could release some Taiwanese films which are sorely underrepresented on home video.

And then in our postconsonantal world, we'll already be waiting on Passion of Joan and Tabu blu rays. So there will be a never-ending death, even with actual death, for the contents of our wallets.TheGodfather wrote:hehe yeah well, that might not be a bad thing if that comes as well: my bank account will be completely empty at the end of the year anyway if MoC keeps releasing all these great titles

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist and Random Speculation
Just a thought, might a DVD/Blu-Ray release of Bertolucci's The Spider's Stratagem (Strategia del ragno) ever be a possibility?
Considering Amazon.com have a VHS copy available for a very competitive $622, it looks like at least someone thinks there might be some demand.

My random speculation for the day: now that a decent transfer of Mann's Reign of Terror has finally surfaced, is there any chance that MoC might be able to licence a BluRay?

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist and Random Speculation
I earlier requested this due to the clip on Mark Cousins' The Story of Film but tonight I finally saw Mario Peixoto's Limite (torrents do have their advantages!) and was blown away. Why hasn't someone released it yet? Whatever the reason, I'm begging that something will happen soon. Please MoC! Here's some possible extras:
• Mario's Sea (O Mar de Mário) and At the Edge of the Earth (Onde a Terra Acaba) - two documentaries on Peixoto and Limite
• Panorama do Cinema Brasileiro, a documentary charting the history of Brazilian cinema up to the Cinema Novo period
• Booklet containing an article by Peixoto (from Ten Contemporary Views on Limite) and an essay by Michael Korfmann (from Senses of Cinema)

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist and Random Speculation
Shouldn't Criterion be releasing Limite in the World Cinema Foundation titles, or are they not doing that still? Hopefully it gets a stand alone release.
Either way, it's one of my favs as well and hopes something gets done.

I really couldn't care who releases it as long as it gets released. However, MoC are probably the best at releasing silents and, living in the UK, it's a lot easier/cheaper/better to support a local label.

Limite is obviously the one I'd most like to see but I wouldn't mind seeing some Humberto Mauro (Ganga Bruta) or Nelson Pereira dos Santos (Rio, 40 Degrees, Barren Lives) either.

Some by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade would be nice additions as well.Calvin wrote:Limite is obviously the one I'd most like to see but I wouldn't mind seeing some Humberto Mauro (Ganga Bruta) or Nelson Pereira dos Santos (Rio, 40 Degrees, Barren Lives) either.

Re: MoC Forthcoming, Wishlist and Random Speculation
Can't say I've heard of him *rushes to Google*.
If you're going to do Tange Saizen it would be nice to see Kōchiyama Sōshun to go along with it. I've heard the materials aren't great so it might have to be an SD extra but would be worth it just to see all the (surviving) Yamanaka titles have a release. Perhaps you could even do a Blu-Ray boxset? Also, I've been wondering, on the MoC 'overlooked' page, you say that the Nikkatsu DVD boxset had "two "lost" silent shorts" but I can't find what they are anywhere. Anyone know?

I'd go for any Yang (including In Our Time), A City of Sadness, The Puppetmaster, A Borrowed Life and Growing Up. After seeing Yi Yi, I'd probably buy anything connected with the Taiwanese New Wave.

+1 for Puppetmaster.
