Janus probably figures that Lili Marleen could do well in its own run (like World on a Wire), whereas the other titles have been domestically available on DVD for years. Hopefully we'll being seeing it soon--it's one of Fassbinder's best and would look revelatory on blu-ray.

Probably no point in asking for Pasolini what with the upcoming MoC's (although isn't Teorema a Wellspring title?)

Does anybody know more about the situation with Teorema? Was Wellspring involved with Koch Lorber (whose release is now OOP and fetching absurd prices on Amazon)?

Essentially the same company. Both of them were run by Richard Lorber and distributed the films he owns/owned, but of course he's lost and gained the rights to various things over the years. He runs the show at Kino now.

Oh well, different strokes. I think it's a complete misfire and Fassbinder's worst film by a mile!

And the people who are clamouring for Wildweschel / Jail Bait should not be holding their breath. The author of the source play hated the film and has been very successful in keeping it suppressed. There are stray prints lying around that occasionally get an airing, but anything approaching official distribution is likely to be very hard to negotiate.

Yeah, it's the T.V. cut, but since it's known as Stationmaster's Wife here in the U.S., it will still go by that title (atleast that is what Olive Films is calling it) even though that title usually refers to the shorter cut. Fantastic indeed.

I wonder if any of those newly acquired Fassbinder films will merit a blu ray. Obviously, Ali and the BRD trilogy seem most likely, I think? Petra Von Kant, maybe. Mother Kusters?

Well all of them that have HD transfers merit a blu, but I doubt Criterion has the time to release them as such.

It'd be nice if they opened the Eclipse line up for blus if they're going to put anything that's got a ready HD transfer in there. As great a resource as it is, it's going to be a bit infuriating if it means lopping off special features and downgrading blu-ready films to fit in.

I think Criterion will release a couple they think are special on blu, aside from catalog upgrades. And then Eclipse might see some others. Maybe.

A lot of great films there, but unfortunately all already available. The release I'd really love to see is an Eclipse of TV Films like Bremen Freedom.

The most important limitations are likely to be available materials for HD, since the existing transfers go back about ten years now, and viable extras.

Bremen Freedom was shot on video, so HD-suitable elements are something of a non-issue there (although it was transferred to film for theatrical screenings). Fassbinder's other video productions were The Coffee Shop, Nora Helmer, and Like a Bird on a Wire.

I think they should open up the Eclipse line to limited special features too, in the sense that if there are any that are just lying around or easy to get hold of, then they shouldn't be excluded just because it's Eclipse. It seems silly to have four or five films linked by a specific theme, director or movement and then no to contextualise them even if extras are available, when a couple of small extras spread across the set would be very welcome: in that sense Arrow and AE handled their Fassbinder stuff very well and it's far more enticing then everything just being barebones.

Regardless, I can't see too many of those sixteen films just being dumped into Eclipse boxes. A couple of Blu-rays a year would be nice.

Small bit of news that everyone pretty much knew was coming out, but I can confirm that Heaven's Gate is coming out on Criterion through my source. And whoever said the disc was finished a year ago earlier in this thread was wrong and the time of the release has nothing to do with Cimino. These things just take time.

But let me be honest and say I'd still prefer a release of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot.

Always good to hear further confirmations of long gestating projects like Heaven's Gate. For all its flaws, this film is some kind of monument if not a masterpiece and one that could not be better suited to release by Criterion on Blu-ray. I came to this one and The Deer Hunter later in my cinephile life and was surprised at how different they both were from their out-sized reputations in the culture. My favorite moments in each film are more about the everydayness of the people and the places portrayed than any grandiose images or statements about the West or Vietnam.

I'm actually more interested in the supplements for this one. I've defended it (I think mostly from my dad) because it's certainly not the disaster everyone claimed it to be but I still found it a bit of a bloated mess. I have to revisit it, though, it's been years since I last saw it so maybe I'll look on it differently.

Fantastic- the restoration and theater run made it more or less inevitable, but I'm glad it's coming sooner rather than later. It's clearly a rerelease, too, and not just a blu upgrade, if they listed a $30 DVD price point.

I noticed last night that the MGM HD channel (which, until last night, I didn't even realize I had) have a showing of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot coming up this week- Tue May 8 3:20pm. With four more showings thru June 30th.

I really cross the figners for a blu-ray upgrade of Murmur of The Heart... being a huge fan of Lea Massari...
