They simply have to be working on Punch Drunk Love, right? It was supposed to come out on Blu-ray from Sony years ago but then just...didn't.

I actually emailed them about those two back around 2000 or 2001. Their response: "Don't expect to see them anytime soon". Indeed!

As I said in the Sony thread, I hope Criterion gets their hands on it before Twilight Tme. And since Criterion seems to have good relations with Paramount, they should also get Hard Eight. With The Master coming out in October, maybe we can see those announcements already this month. 8-[

Just watched CAMERAMAN, the documentary on Jack Cardiff. A lot of the movies he lensed, and most of the ones he directed himself from that period between 1958 through 1973 are completely unavailable in any format. Anyone have any idea who owns these? I would love to see a set with SONS AND LOVERS, YOUNG CASSIDY,THE LIQUIDATORS and THE MERCENARIES. The man was truly a genius and in this day of digitally enhanced images, it would be great to have his work restored and re-appraised.

Sons and Lovers resides with 20th Century Fox, while Young Cassidy and The Liquidators are Warner Bros. titles, so a box set is highly unlikely. Also, The Mercenaries (AKA Dark of the Sun) was already released on MOD DVD by Warners in the Archive Collection.

Young Cassidy shows up all the time on TCM in a decent transfer. It might be a candidate for a Warner Archive release.

SpiderBaby wrote:But it's hard with those Fassbinder films to say which ones "deserve" mainline attention and which doesn't. I could pick 8 or 9 of those 12 as "worthy". If Black Moon got a mainline release for Malle, Effi Briest, Satan's Brew, or Fear of Fear shouldn't be a problem.

With that said, I could see like zedz suggested, an "Early Fassbinder" Eclipse to cover "Love is Colder Than Death", "Gods of the Plague", and "The American Soldier". 3 down, 9 to go (maybe 10 with Lili Marleen) the blu-ray route. They even have the new lower priced blu-rays, so release them in pairs (example Fox and his Friends with a mainline blu-ray with all the extras, along with a lower price point blu-ray of Satan's Brew).
Why is Ali: FEtS left out of these lists? has something happened with it? I sold my copy years ago out of desperation (damn you IRS!) and have resisted rebuying it for the last two years figuring it had to be in the upgrade pipeline...however far off that may be. It seems a perfect candidate for blu, and I've really come to hate those double wide cases as space becomes more and more of an issue every passing month.

Good question, but Janus posted this a while back on Facebook and it included Fear Eats the Soul along with all the other Wellspring Fassbinders/BRD Trilogy.

If it wasn't for the obvious re-issue of BRD coming along, I would have thought FEtS would be the next upgrade. I don't think anything happened with the rights (as it was licensed from Wellspring too, or so it says on here).

Also, speaking of the double wide cases, I wonder if they ever changed this film to a new case like they have done to others?

Some two disc Criterions are still sold in older cases. F for Fake would be one example.

Someone should compile a list of all the wide double-disc plastic cases, because they usually accompanied a 'major' release and could be a good predictor of what's imminent on blu ray. (A few come to mind: Ali, Mabuse, Jules & Jim, Shoot the Piano Player, F for Fake, the other Ozus, Carnival of Souls, In The Mood for Love, Knife in the Water, Do the Right Thing, Richard III, L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, Young Mr. Lincoln)

For a very long time, it was their only way of presenting double-disc sets. It had everything to do with how many extras they had available for a given title and only secondarily (in the instances when they went out and made all those extras) the 'major'-ness of any particular release. Rights situations and actual sales figures are probably a much stronger indicator of what's coming to Blu.

A quick count, from the spine numbers before the double-width cases were retired, gives more than 30 single-width case upgrades versus 15 double-width case upgrades (and some of those double-cases, like M and The Wages of Fear, were originally single-width editions that were upgraded, and that was itself the policy for a time: upgrade means adding an extra disc.)

But anyway, in response to your question and from memory, the following spine numbers were at one time or another issued in those double-wide Amarays:
30, 36, 40, 63, 97, 98, 100, 102, 106, 108, 135, 140, 141, 147, 151, 157, 164, 171, 175, 176, 182, 184, 198, 213, 215, 217, 218, 219, 220, 221, 228, 229 (actually a triple-wide Amaray for this), 231, 232, 234, 235, 236, 239, 248, 266, 267, 278, 281, 286, 288, 302, 307, 315, 316, 320, 325, 331, 335, 337, 338, 341.

I can't remember whether there was one of those cases inside the My Own Private Idaho slipcase (spine 277). I think it was a digipack.

Well, part memory. I scrolled through the release list on Criterion's website and noted all the titles I remembered in that packaging.

(Please don't think I have every spine number and its attendant packaging memorised! I'm sad, but not at Olympics level yet!)

Well, that's one way of avoiding another maddening debate about their 'mission statement'!

Don't forget the original DVD edition of The Man Who Fell To Earth (spine 304), which had a double wide Amaray packaged together with the Walter Tevis book both inside a slip case.

I would love for Octobers Releases to have a Boxset included.
The dream would be Apu Trilogy with Wenders Road Trilogy.

Have they ever released two box sets at once (not including Eclipse series)?
