Could even be announced in a week for Halloween.

If Eraserhead gets an October release ontop of a likely Rosemary's Baby release, Criterion's facebook page will explode in flames (that would be an appropriate image for either film actually).

You mean the Ray film that gets five requests a day on CC's Facebook page?

Well if we are going off that, I can't wait for The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, Badlands, and somehow WB giving them the rights to release The Devils.

Yes, if Criterion got the rights to any of those, I would expect them to brag about it.

This interview was done in 1999/2000, guessing from the bottom paragraph of the first page. A lot has changed since then.

Obviously a lot has changed with regard to Eraserhead, but I think the point about the dangers of fans' rampant speculation is as timely now as ever.

Well, speculation kinda goes out the window when Criterion announces it'll be on a related website. Has there been anything that was put on that site that they didn't eventually release?

I certainly get the "don't jinx it and invoke the wrath of Lynch again" message. Criterion knows their fanbase though, and what their reaction would be. They've got a better grasp on the quirks of Lynch's personality too. I don't think they'd let this cat out of the bag unless they had every contract signed, i dotted, t crossed, and hatch battened.

Likely a mistake. Saying both Mahler and the Home and the World are expiring too, all three of which were just added in the last week or so.

Has anyone seen this movie? I think this used to be with MGM. Hopefully this means MGM let some of the foreign language films released under Orion classics lapse. I kind of always hoped MGM would let Pauline at the Beach go so that in theory Criterion could do a 2nd Rohmer box. (if they wanted)

The Orion trailer for this film is just awful. It's just a bunch of stills while a narrator reads off plaudits from various critics.

Do you mean "has anyone seen this on Hulu?". I saw the BABETTE'S FEAST about a decade ago and thought it was charming.

I currently own the OOP MGM dvd of Babette's Feast and recommend it for it's tone and style. I wonder when Criterion releases it on dvd/Blu if they would do a sequential spine number release of Orson Welles' The Immortal Story, also based on a Karen Blixen story, or if they just discuss it in a supplement. Welles had a great respect for Blixen's works and tried filming several of her stories and novels.

I think MGM lets Orion Classics titles lapse pretty regularly. Criterion's already got a decent number of ex-Orion titles in their library, a couple of which (Mystery Train, Wings of Desire) had earlier MGM discs. MGM also has/had A Tale of Springtime, though there might be rights issues with the other films in the cycle, since they all had different U.S. distributors.

Pauline at the Beach is part of Comedies and Proverbs and A Tale of Springtime is part of The Tales of Four Seasons so that'd be a lot of rights to resolve for the other films for two Rohmer boxes.

With the B&N sale going on, this is a bit redundant, but there's some nice titles in the weekly Hulu sale:

The Great Dictator
Delirious Fictions of William Klein
Seduced and Abandoned
Oshima's Outlaw Sixties
Simon of the Desert

The other five Comedies and Proverbs were all Fox Lorber titles on DVD. They went OOP a long while back, so the rights could've expired. Worst-case scenario is they'd be tied up with the Weinsteins, but they seem willing to let their FL/Winstar/Wellspring titles lapse. The other three Seasons films were only released on VHS (by New Yorker, Fox Lorber and Polygram), so naturally they're long OOP as well.

The other titles in the Comedies and Proverbs set are almost certainly with Janus. All the Moral Tales used to be with Fox Lorber too. Janus probably picked up all the Rohmers a a package. If MGM let Pauline at the Beach go, in theory they could easily do a 2nd Rohmer box.

The Moral Tales were originally licensed from Wellspring, presumably back when Wellspring was still an independent entity. I also suspect Wellspring's rights have since lapsed and were picked up by Janus, but that's speculative. As for the Comedies and Proverbs, the new 35mm print of Summer/The Green Ray that's been making the rounds is a Film Desk release. But Criterion could still do it, since Film Desk is theatrical-only.
