Amazon lists an out of print dvd of Wind Across the Everglades that was released by Warners in Spain....so probably still with Warners in North America.

Knock on Any Door is in the TCM Bogart set (plus it's a mediocre film). If there's something coming besides In a Lonely Place, given the rights situations, Bitter Victory might be the most likely choice.
The Lusty Men was done for RKO, should be a Warners property in R1.

Any informed speculation about whether to buy Zulawski titles on currently available DVDs, or wait (and hope) for HD upgrades?

Doesn't sound like BDs are forthcoming.Rustle wrote:Any informed speculation about whether to buy Zulawski titles on currently available DVDs, or wait (and hope) for HD upgrades?

This was just on Second Sight thread. Their possible release is probably going to be region B locked.Calvin wrote:Second Sight have said on Facebook that they're "looking into" releasing Possession on Blu-Ray

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
The one Kurosawa movie i want to see re-released by Criterion is Dersu Uzala. Criterion did release it on laserdisc and Kino has a good dvd release but is not 16x9 widescreen and the Ruscico dvd has a horrible shimering issue which makes it unwatchable. TCM-HD did broadcast the Kino version in 16X9 image that so far is the best showing i have seen of the movie but did read somewhere the original negative needs a major restoration.Cinephrenic wrote:What can Criterion release that Kino hasn't or have already?

I believe Kino have said they are working on a Blu for the Kurosawa though that was a great many months ago.

Flicker Alley.
Weird though. Why is this http://www.bampfa.berkeley.edu/film/FN19589 being credited as permission from Kino Lorber? Could some of these listings be mixed up?

Could be a mix-up, but AFAIK Flicker Alley doesn't do theatrical distribution, so I wouldn't expect to see their name listed. Kino does theatrical-only distribution for some titles, including a number of Criterions -- M, Pandora's Box, Ivan's Childhood, Solaris, The Threepenny Opera, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse -- and I assume that's what's going on here.

Re: 634 Rosemary's Baby
Makes me think there may a bigger snag with Trilogy of Life than they originally thought. Obviously it was almost ready to go for October, with box art being ready (and apparently sent out to some) and four empty spine numbers, but something held it up at the last minute. Whatever postponed it from that announcement may have ended up pushing it to next year.eerik wrote:[Rosemary's Baby is] now #630.

Not to get too far off topic, but I've noticed that Powell and Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp had a DCP restoration (supervised by Martin Scorsese) was screened at the Museum of the Moving Image this past July. I wonder if this means a Criterion upgrade is in the near future?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
There's quite a bit of discussion about the details of the restoration over the last couple of years in the Colonel Blimp thread. The UK blu-ray has already been announced and, yes, a Criterion Blu-ray in 2013 is inevitable.AfterTheRain wrote:Not to get too far off topic, but I've noticed that Powell and Pressburger's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp had a DCP restoration (supervised by Martin Scorsese) was screened at the Museum of the Moving Image this past July. I actually thought Colonel Blimp would come in November, since I believe the UK one is coming around the same time.
then again, restorations mean almost nothing..we still don't have Bresson, etc

An interview with Pedro Costa, published some months ago on the arts supplement of the portuguese daily Público, mentions a forthcoming US DVD release of Casa de Lava. There is a new HD master supervised by Costa about to be released in the UK by Second Run. Could it end on a Criterion Blu-Ray? Or will Cinema Guild get it, like they did with Ne Change Rien?

I thought that Zeitgeist Films had the rights to all the Quay films locked up pretty tight (the were the theatrical distributors for Piano Tuner and just released a new DVD of Benjamenta two weeks ago). I wonder if they're not just interview subjects for a feature on somebody else's film. A Svankmajer, perhaps?

I just got an email from Film Forum advertising this at MOMA, which probably explains why they are in town.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
I met Wim Wenders yesterday and asked about any future Criterion editions of his films in the works. He answered by once again confirming Alice In The Cities (although he didn't mention the other films in the 'Road Movie Trilogy', it may have just been him singling out that specific title since it was discussed earlier that morning during a Q&A). He also mentioned a film that I have not been able to find previously rumored as a Criterion possibility, Until The End Of The World. I don't know the licensing details for it, although a quick glance at IMDB shows that the US rights are with Warners... can it be so? He gave no indication on when the releases would be released, but did speak of them as though he already completed his directorial input/approval.

Well, this is pretty great news. Until The End of the World was a favorite Wenders film for me even in its butchered theatrical version. When I was lucky enough to see a rare screening of the complete multi-hour trilogy at the American Cinematheque, I was about as blown away as I thought I'd be. Not a masterpiece, but a great big beautiful epic of everything Wenders has ever loved about movies and stories and life, and an immensely enjoyable experience. Ripe for reevaluation in its proper length, this would be an ideal addition to the Criterion Collection.

I wonder if the Quay brothers might be involved in one of the supplements on Eraserhead or the Lynch shorts? Would make sense.

WOW, okay...the Road Trilogy is taking forever but i'm almost okay with that knowing that this could come eventually. i've never seen the movie, but given Wenders' rep and what people say about it..it'd be a day one purchase for me.henryviii wrote:I met Wim Wenders yesterday and asked about any future Criterion editions of his films in the works.
