Re: Worst DVD Covers...ever! (Part 3-D)
Why is atrocious cover art such a frequent thing on blu-ray releases? Can't they use the original poster art like dvds do or at least use a closer approximation to the older dvd releases which were less tacky/non-sensical?

Re: Worst DVD Covers...ever! (Part 3-D)
One has to wonder what possessed some poor hack to go to all the trouble of photoshopping the newspapers out to replace them with an inexplicable record and red stripe motif. A lazy cut and paste of the iconic stack of papers shot would have been perfectly fine.
That said, of course this is the edition I wound up buying if only because I'd didn't want to pay extra for no-frills Ambersons when I still have the CC special edition laserdisc. Not that the jigsaw motif of the box set was much better. Is it so hard to do the right thing by Kane?

Seriously, it looks like a musical gangster flick. Maybe the vinyl grooves are waves from the RKO tower, that's the only thing that could make sense.

Over the past 7 years, studios have felt the need to replace those wonderful original movie posters with shitty photoshop like the one above. That and big heads in the covers.

Well I'm confused. I thought Ultraviolet was a digital copy.

As I mentioned in the KANE thread, the real laugh is the artwork for the first disc itself which features the faces of Welles as "Kane", Ruth Warrick as first wife "Emily" and...Joan Blair as "Georgia the Madam", a role cut from the film! Evidently, the Warners art department were under the impression that Blair was Dorothy Comingore who played Susan Alexander, Kane's second wife.

Not to mention the back of the Ambersons DVD features a scene from the boarding house that was cut from the film!Roger Ryan wrote:As I mentioned in the KANE thread, the real laugh is the artwork for the first disc itself which features the faces of Welles as "Kane", Ruth Warrick as first wife "Emily" and...Joan Blair as "Georgia the Madam", a role cut from the film! Re: Worst DVD Covers...ever! (Part 3-D)
The other photo used on the back (Joseph Cotten and Anne Baxter in the carriage) is technically from a scene cut from the film as well. And the front cover image awkwardly photoshops Tim Holt into a still he was not originally a part of. That entire release is pretty much a mess.Drucker wrote: Not to mention the back of the Ambersons DVD features a scene from the boarding house that was cut from the film!

Re: Worst DVD Covers...ever! (Part 3-D)

I recently got the DVD of this from my local library. The art was improved slightly by the removal of the thought/speech bubbles and the shrinking of the heads to a somewhat more anatomically (though still not entirely) correct size. But, really, who decided to put a picture of James Mercer in his underwear on the cover?! And why is he so much tinier than Carrie Brownstein? I really hope the version I posted above was just a joke, but an image search for the cover yielded mostly that particular picture.

I think the question of why you rented it is more pressing than any of those

Haha, I actually got it just because I'm a big fan of Eluvium, the musician who did the film's original music. I hadn't seen the cover beforehand, I swear!mfunk9786 wrote:I think the question of why you rented it is more pressing than any of those

As far as I'm concerned, we could lock this thread right now after that in ultimate mic drop fashion.

New editions of I Love Lucy will be released in the coming months with some incredibly misguided new cover art, but this one is the most egregious:

Yeah, that looks a hell of a lot better than the dollar bin art on the current ones.

I'll admit that the current artwork is pretty lousy colorized photoshop, but wow! I think these new ones are godawful. We easily forget how beautiful Lucille Ball was, but this cover art sure does its best to make sure we keep forgetting.

I think it's the sadness in her eyes as much as anything- the Roy Liechtenstein look seems fine, if a bit irrelevant, but the look on her face makes me think she's just given an unpleasant blowjob and hasn't made up her mind how to finish it.
