re: MAG AMB. Everyone's still hoping and praying something could be found somewhere (Brazil, etc). I think that's holding back the 4K restoration, but other than that, I'm just guessing.

Anyone else find it impossible to get used to the idea of Nick being just a normal speculating forum guy without any insider knowledge of various companies upcoming releases?

Yes Just a bit. Reading between the lines what his post above really means is ' I know this guy in Brazil who's turned up the original cutting copy of Ambersons and the boys in Bologna are gonna be working on a 4K reconstruction to be out in time for Xmas 2013'.

Nick are there honestly people "in the biz" who still consider it a possibility to the point that it's dictating their actions?

People do that all the time. Warners are still searching for the 8-hour cut of "Greed", which explains the film's non-release.

Warners are on record (at various HTF chats) as saying they're still scouring for better materials. I don't think they were specifically referring to turning up the Brazil print, but they have definitely been looking for better materials for a long time. They want to be sure. It has been many years now though since those comments.

I think it's really because Warner knows they'd get a lot of shit for throwing Greed, The Crowd, The Wind, et al. into the Archive but they're too chicken to actually release the stuff. They can't put them in actor sets like the Garbo and Cheney packages or shove them into big anniversary releases like The Wizard of Oz or Ben-Hur, so they're just not going to bother (that they didn't do a new HD scan for Ben-Hur '25, one of their major properties, is the greatest indication yet that they just don't care.)

I can believe that the Warner of a few years ago probably was diligently looking for better materials / lost footage for Ambersons and other titles, but I doubt that Warners of today would still be doing so. I can't really imagine Greed getting a major commercial release from Warners under any circumstances in the current climate. (When was the last time they issued a deluxe pressed-disc edition of a silent film?)

And anyway, hasn't it been nearly six months since the last reissue of Casablanca? Priorities, people!

Tabu double format is being released January 14th, according to blu-ray.com. Any truth to this?

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tabu-Blu-ray/29376/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edit: It's a mistake. Clicking on the pre-order link, it's Gomes's film that appears.

Eureka Entertainment will be announcing their line up for January and February 2013 at Midday on Monday 8 October 2012 via its twitter feeds @eurekavideo & @mastersofcinema. The picture on facebook shows 5 blu-rays (1 of which is dual format).

Bottom left looks like Onibaba upgrade and top left possibly Tabu upgrade, based on the colours.

I wonder if the top centre image might be The Blue Angel.

Presumably one of them is Fear and Desire.

yes, Onibaba for sure.
the black and white one at the top may be Fear and Desire, going on the colours of the kino release.
The one next to Onibaba must be recognisable by someone, looks like green smoke coming out of something and a hand next to the top of a cowboy hat?

I wonder if the black and white one could be another Mizoguchi, hopefully Oharu! It's the same colour pattern as Ugetsu. When is Birth of a Nation supposed to be released?

Looks like it is. (borrowing from the bluray.com forums...)

Birth of a Nation is still forthcoming, though I don't know if any of these look like that'll be the cover.

Given that the image bottom left is fairly certainly 'Onibaba', it's worth pointing out that the image bottom right isn't too dissimilar to the 'Kuroneko' DVD release cover. The colour and image positioning is admittedly slightly different, but the hand looks very similar and it would make sense to put 'Onibaba' and 'Kuroneko' out on blu-ray together. Since it's out on DVD already, it would likely be a blu-ray only title rather than dual-format and there is already an HD master, as it's out on Criterion.

Top left's colors match Tabu's DVD cover pretty well, but if that were the case, I'd expect to see the top end of a spear jutting out. Also, that one looks like BD-only, whereas Tabu is supposed to be dual format.

Speaking of which, it looks like Onibaba will be BD-only as well?

I reckon that considering they've resorted to DVD-only releases alongside the Dual format releases of a particular title (such as Cleopatra, among other recent releases), they realise that most people who bought the Dual Formats are only interested in the Blu-ray, considering if someone wanted the DVD they could just buy it on its own for a slightly cheaper price. So with a new release of Onibaba they could keep the original DVD in print (like it currently is) and just produce a Blu-ray for those wanting to upgrade. I hope this isn't the case as I find the DVD included in the Dual-Format quite practical, but I suspect that this is what will happen. Then they're saving money by not producing a DVD that 90% of people will probably never take out of the case.

I just hope the MoC of Der blaue Engel can at least match the extras of the German disc. I've already switched from my MoC M to the German one and I'm planning on doing the same with Metropolis before long.

Wasn't there some video issue with the Warner edition of Metropolis in Germany?
