Oliveira´s Francisca and Satin Slipper screens in 35mm at this year´s Lisbon & Estoril Film Festival.

Satin Slipper is said to be distributed in Portugal by Lusomundo. Good news. They´re open to releasing Oliveira films on DVD with English subtitles.

The anthology film Invisible World (Mundo invisível) finally released at Rome Film Festival. Reviewed in Variety.

Oliveira shot his contribution (Do visível ao invisível) several years ago (included in the Oliveira 22-dvd box from Lusomundo).

Has Cinema Guild picked up Gebo? Just noticed that the Epicentre DVD has English subs, but would rather hold for a likely superior (and maybe Blu?) release from CG.

In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, Epicentre's DVD of Cristóvão Colombo also seems to be English-friendly.

I ordered the DVD of Gebo directly from Epicentre more than a month ago but have yet to receive it. If I ever do I will post a follow up on quality. As far as I know Cinema Guild has no plans for this film theatrically. I'm not sure what that implies about eventual video release plans. I suspect it will receive a less elaborate edition than the last two films regardless of who releases it. I'd also recommend the Portuguese DVD of Cristóvão Colombo as it too contains English subs, though if it is the same edition as the one in the box set (and I would assume that it is) the tragedy then is that the extended accompanying interview with MO has no subs. This seems a kind of arbitrary thing with these Portuguese DVDs as many of the other individual versions of his films from the same company have all the extensive extras subbed so just be forewarned.

I found an interview with Oliveira´s producer Luís Urbano and with actress Leonor Silveira about Gebo et l´ombre.

Urbano confirms that Michel Piccoli and Ludivine Cleric were replaced by Michel Lonsdale and Claudia Cardinale due to insurance and financial guarantee factors.

He also tells that Lonsdale was cast due to his physical resemblance to Joao Bernard da Costa, former director of Cinemateca Portuguesa, and because he appeared in India Song, one of Oliveira´s favorite films.

According to Urbano, Oliveira shot Gebo from a 40-page shooting plan; "the film was all in his head".

Oliveira himself stated in an interview with Cahiers that the creditors forced health check-ups on everyone involved, and while he himself passed with flying colours, Piccoli's test results turned out to be a problem!

O. hints at continuing financing delays for Velho do Restelo. He´s waiting for for some sort of state subsidy. Looks much more fit than in February in accompanying photos.

Several of MO´s faithful actors have been cast in the film, based on writings by Cervantes, Teixeira do Pascoaes and Camilo Castelo Branco. Excerpts from earlier films by MO will be included. DoP: Renato Berta. The film is expected to be completed in August (in time for the Venice festival?) and is a Portuguese-French co-production between O Som e a Furia and Epicentre Films, with public funding from the Catholic University of Porto and other Portuguese sources, and from the French Ministry of Culture and Information.

Epicentre released Gebo e a Sombra on DVD in France, with English subs. Bodes well for a DVD of O Velho do Restelo.

This is fantastic and deeply encouraging news. Certainly seems like a career summation work for him. Glad that his regular cast will return though I expected nothing less (and always imagined that Cintra would have to be the lead). Working again with someone like Mário Barroso is also very exciting to hear as is Berta as DP. I'm just grateful that this finally got off the ground; it sounds to me as though it's getting harder to find financing all the time, and probably not just because of MO's age. It may be a good thing for him that he's at the end of his career as it doesn't look likely to be getting any easier.

At Portuguese FNAC, there's a listing for a DVD of de Oliveira's 1963 film Passion of Jesus a.k.a. Rite of Spring. Release date is May 30. Haven't found any info about subtitles. Nor any other info for that matter.

The DVD release of Doomed Love that was rumored in 2012 still hasn't materialized, right?

Despite what's in the articles I strongly suspect that should be Camões, rather than Cervantes, as Camões created the character in "The Lusiads".

The title translates as The Old Man of Belem, a character in Os Lusíadas, a 16th Century verse poem in Portuguese by Luis Vaz de Camoes.

Wish they could have included Um Século de Energia as well as then this really would have seemed like a coming together of his final films collection but I really can't complain about such a wonderful set. Including the Botelho is a real coup as that's especially rare and difficult to find (with English subs).

Does any Portuguese forum member know if this great-looking boxset can be acquired from another website? The Portuguese Fnac doesn't deliver overseas. Unfortunately, after doing a Google search twice, I came to the conclusion that the box is a Fnac exclusive, but I hope I'm wrong.

Is it too much to dream with a Manoel de Oliveira Eclipse set? His most admired films are unavailable in the US, the UK and Brazil.

I don't know if anything's changed, but I'm based in Australia and managed to get the Ruiz 'Raridades' box set from the Portuguese FNAC website last year – all I needed to do was to write '000000000' in the NIF box (a Spanish/Portuguese thing that requires customers to enter a citizenship number).
