Sadly, the absence of any titles from the excellent U.K. label Masters of Cinema can probably be explained by the fact that this label stopped sending me any of its releases about nine months ago, after sending me all of its releases prior to that — a decision that I continue to find baffling.

If it's any consolation, JR, they only send me the titles I pay for too. Same goes for every other distributor. Appalling, ain't it?

I'll be somewhat shocked if Argo doesn't win the Best Picture Oscar at this point. It also makes the Director's Oscar more up in the air than it already was. Ang Lee for the upset win, perhaps?

The recognition for Jay Roach is really ridiculous. His tv work is only slightly less pedestrian than his film work.

Roach's work on Recount was enough to steer me away from any future docudramas he might make. Maybe that film improved as it continued, but when I shut it off during the hour mark, it was due to a growing frustration that the director (and screenwriter) seemed more interested in using the film as a highlight reel for pop culture moments surround the election (scenes like Spacey stopping the action of the film to watch a Jimmy Fallon skit on SNL, comment on how it was funny, and then return to the droll action of the film). The design of the film seemed to reward viewers more for their ability to recognize key events in the 2000 election rather than delve into the material with real political savvy. In rewatching Zodiac this weekend, I'm more and more amazed by David Fincher and James Vanderbilt's ability to pile on such an overwhelming amount of information and cultural minutia, trusting that the audience probably won't follow most of it but giving them enough credit that they'll understand a reasonable amount to get through the picture.

I'm always surprised at how few truly terrible films have won. It's usually meh films that win than actively bad ones.
