Wow, about six years since the last post. Yes, this is a bit odd & abstract but well-acted & the Sardinian house complex tops the one in Contempt. The setting just looks beautiful. Although the message is about how cold & meaningless all the money is without love, boy do they sure make the money look good. I'm not sure I really got all it was aiming at but I guess that doesn't matter. I'll have to hunt down a copy of the original play & read it at some point. I can see why it was a flop - just too out there for ordinary audiences. But Taylor was amazing in it. She's doing a shrew-bitch at the level of her work in Virginia Woolf. John Barry's score is amazing & there's a real neat use of it where it goes from diegetic to non-diegetic and back again throughout the film.
