Lots of comparisons to Twin Peaks and AMC's The Killing for Jane Campion's six-hour Top of the Lake. Variety's Justin Chang has a full review. IFC/Sundance have the U.S. rights and will air it in seven parts on the latter channel in March. Based on the early reception, I wouldn't be surprised to see it turn up as a Criterion release.

This looks astounding. I was suckered into The Killing before quickly realizing it was going nowhere - good to hear that this entire work has been seen and signed off on as being very strong.

The first two episodes have been aired by Sundance and are available on demand. I'm hooked.

I'm midway through the second episode now I like it. I had a huge crush on Moss when she was on The West Wing, and although I have little interest in Mad Men I'm happy it's helped her get things like this. Mullan is great, too.

This ended up like In the Cut, ie. gripping but a bit much! Is this what New Zealand is really like? Is every heterosexual male a paedophile, rapist and/or drug dealer? I'm intrigued.

I was rather underwhelmed by the finale. Or just too bummed by the day's events to be fully kept by it. But as a whole, I can't knock it.

I saw this yesterday, and it's a lot of fun. I liked it more than the first season, though it had some of the same shortcomings, particularly in relation to the procedural / thriller aspect (which was somewhat lumpy and cliche-ridden). All the casually observed stuff thrown around it is very enjoyable, however, and the series is often really funny. Elisabeth Moss and Gwendoline Christie as a team is practically a visual gag all by itself, and when you throw in a third silhouette in the form of Clayton Jacobson - and all three of them are weirdly emotionally volatile - there's some really nice off-kilter comic chemistry. There are a couple of hilariously unexpected Kath & Kim references, and the remaining loose ends from the first series are tied up abruptly with a gloriously WTF attitude. It's a tale of bad policing, bad parenting and bad pimping (and a deliberately queasy blurring of the lines between them), but the ultimate horror boils down to "what if your 17-year-old daughter fell in love with Tommy Wiseau?"
