A mixed bag, to say the least. A bit sad to see people like Soderbergh, Ozon and Refn etc in competition and Claire Denis in Un Certain Regard.
That said, it seems to be the way Cannes is going, most of the best and more interesting stuff is now found in Un Certain Regard.

It's a theatrical release outside the U.S. It comes out in UK theaters in June and IMDb says a French release is set for September.

The Jia is a real shock, since the Chinese media reported just over a month ago that Jia was planning to shoot it "this year." It's apparently a return to the migrant-worker theme, but I've seen nothing more specific.

EDIT: I guess those early reports were wrong--it's a road movie with martial-arts scenes (!!!) that Jia intended as a sort of dry run for his eternally-delayed In the Qing Dynasty. The English title is A Touch of Sin, in reference to the King Hu film.

Arnaud Desplechin's "Jimmy P. (Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian)" is also in competition.

Hope to see the best of Sorrentino now he's working in Italian and with Toni Servillo again, who is surely one of the most underappreciated actors in the world. Sorrentino is such a fantastic director, especially with how he (and Bigazzi) manage to beautifully blend the visual and audial aspects of their work. This Must Be the Place wasn't a bad film but I think it was still comfortably his weakest so far.

Quite an interesting / surprising line-up. Absence of Kelly Reichardt and relegation of Claire Denis is surprising after last year's furore around the lack of female directors. Makes this a hard one to call this year. Early favourite for the Palme d'Or would have to be Kore-eda, possibly Haroun or Payne. I would add Desplechin if not for this politically correct casting controversy.

That fake list that leaked out looks better than the real one, but whatever...

I was hoping that Jonathan Glazer's UNDER THE SKIN would be there.

There will almost certainly be more titles added. Today's press release had an unusually small number of films playing in the main competition and Un Certain Regard.

I guess this means the film formerly known as Lowlife or The Nightingale is now officially called The Immigrant? Liked both previous titles more, but what the hell.

Most excited for the Kore-eda, the Coens and James Gray. Here's hoping that Miike's new film is better than his dire Harakiri remake.

This is probably a silly question but:

Is Cannes open to the public or is only critics/industry people/filmmakers?

And here's the full competition jury:

Steven Spielberg (President)
Daniel Auteuil
Vidya Balan
Kawase Naomi
Nicole Kidman
Ang Lee
Cristian Mungiu
Lynne Ramsay
Christian Ulmen
Christoph Waltz

Nice to see Lynne Ramsay putting her free time to good use.

That's a pretty heavyweight jury this year. Great to see the likes of Kawase Naomi and Cristian Mungiu in the mix.

Heavyweight jury, albeit quite mainstream. Kore-eda remains a best tip for the Palme I would say, barring the appearance of any sex dolls.

I was thinking the same - I can't see Spielberg, Kidman and Lee pushing for something more adventurous for the top prize. Could be interesting with Ramsay, maybe Waltz and especially Mungiu in the mix. Can you imagine the debates they would have over the merits of some of these films?

I think you're underestimating Kidman's taste. Just look at some of the titles in her post-Cruise career: Dogville, Birth, Stoker. And earlier there were films with Jane Campion, Alejandro Amenabar, Gus Van Sant, and Stanley Kubrick. While not exactly modeling herself on Isabelle Huppert, Kidman seems to understand that film is a director's medium and to seek out collaborations with the best ones -- at least every other year or so.

Noah Baumbauch, too, in one of her best performances. It's worth noting that she makes fairly daring choices for a relatively mainstream actor even outside auteurist considerations- Birth, Fur, and even The Paperboy, however terrible, are all pretty strange even for indie movies. As she was a producer as well as an actor in Rabbit Hole and In the Cut, I would guess that her tastes run to emotional brutality and odd sexuality (which seems consistent with a lot of her movie choices.)
