John Cassavetes on DVD
After watching his Criterion cycle, I'm now dying to see his three other masterpieces on DVD: Husbands, Minnie and Moskowitz, and Love Streams.
According to IMDB Husbands and Love Streams are both Sony properties, and Moskowitz is Universal. If this is true, does it mean that we're probably not going to see these films on DVD anytime soon?... especially not from Criterion.

Moskowitz was given a solid DVD release by Anchor Bay, although I believe it's now out of print. My local (very good) video store still had a copy a few months ago.
Love Streams was given a French DVD release. Information about that can be found in this thread.

Yes, Moskowitz is OOP. You can find used copies for around $40. You can always rent it from netflix. Very doubtful on any new Region 1 releases of Husbands, Minne & Moskowitz, or Love Streams. The ENcore cable channel has been showing Husbands a lot this month so you can probably catch it there.
Otherwise, multi-region or bootlegs are your only option.

So I watched LOVE STREAMS last night and I have two questions. One, who is the bearded man that Cassavetes laughs at in the final sequence in the house? Two, was Cassavetes's wave at the end intentional? I assume in the story he's waving to his sister, but I could be wrong.
Thanks to whomever answers it first.

Just thought it should be mentioned that an episode of "Johnny Staccato" will be included on the Bravo/Universal DVD "Brilliant But Cancelled: Crime Shows," due May 16th.

So, obviously there is a new mk2 transfer of Minnie & Moskowitz and according to amazon.fr a dvd was released April 10th. Does anyone have the DVD and want to drop some comments about the picture quality, (forced) subs, extras etc.? Many thanks!Rupert Pupkin wrote: Minnie & Moskowitz has just been liscenced by Mk2 : transfer is excellent and the 2nd DVD features a really interesting and tricky analyse of this movie, + an excellent documentary with Cassevetes...
often many movie licenced by Arte and Mk2 have been released or are planned to be released by Criterion (La jetée, the Louis Malle box set, and on the side of Mk2 all the Truffaut, some Bresson such as Pickpocket, etc...)

In this thread at DVDTalk, one of the moderators mentioned that Husbands, among several other catalog titles, was coming soon to dvd from Sony.

Well, let's just hope that it is Cassavetes' original cut.
Speaking of director's cuts, I also hope that Nickelodeon is the longer version presented in black and white, which was Bogdanovich's original intention back in '76 and that is how it was presented back in March at the Castro Theater in San Francisco at the behest of Cpt. Ascot.
Great to see that I Never Sang for My Father and a legit edition of Five are finally coming to DVD, too.

I hope it's not (though since the print is already struck, I'm sure it will be)-- there's a big difference between filming in black and white with special lenses and film, and just color-adjusting the film 32 years later.Person wrote:Speaking of director's cuts, I also hope that Nickelodeon is the longer version presented in black and white, which was Bogdanovich's original intention back in '76 and that is how it was presented back in March at the Castro Theater in San Francisco at the behest of Cpt. No, since that was a screening of an archive print as part of a MoMA series focused on films with a Jazz score. The film is terrific, of course, at least as good in its own way as Shadows (although that film is much more historically important) and way better than A Child is Waiting.Too late Blues recently played at MOMA in NYC. Should that give me any reason to have hope for a video release anytime soon...?

The bearded man is the dog.
Minnie and Moskowitz is all over eBay on European DVDs.
There was a pretty good DVD-r of the "complete" restored UCLA cut of Husbands available from sellers. I got it from a guy calling his site Bob's Movies... which appears to no longer be online, alas.
Machine Gun McCain just came out in a French DVD - check Amazon France under the Italian title, Gli Intoccabili.

Husbands will be released in Spain by Sony in November.
