Couldn't resist linking this cute art project where a Criterion fan has turned the covers of Badlands, Modern Times, and A Man Escaped into moving dioramas. Be sure to mouse over each one and turn the sound on.

No matter how aesthetically pleasing, a cover of a naked girl eating shit can only be called a lateral move at best

Well, to be fair to that awful cover, at least the entire packaging is awful for consistency's sake

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you'd be in the minority in thinking the new Diabolique cover doesn't beat this:rrenault wrote:Whenever Criterion changes their cover for a blu-ray upgrade it's always a step down from the original. The original covers for Rashomon, Solaris, and Diabolique were all better. Okay, maybe not always. The updated covers for The 39 Steps, Beauty and the Beast, and Autumn Sonata are fine, but still...

I really like the new Solaris artwork.

Re: Janus Films
I don't like the new Solaris cover, but definitely like the new one for Diabolique! What do you guys think about the new The Rules of the Game cover? I think the old one was far better.

I hated the cover initially but it has grown on me, and I quite like the packaging. It's elegant and modest. I think the sisters would have approved, at least.cdnchris wrote:Babette's Feast

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I thought the new Rules of the Game cover was enjoyable to look at but not appropriate to the serious, frank tone of the film. I never liked the old one that much. Back when it came out (back in the ancient days of complaining about Criterion covers), someone posted that original cover, with its mosaic of pictures and interconnecting letters, alongside one of the Grand Theft Auto covers and since then whenever I've looked at that DVD cover I haven't been able to avoid thinking of Grand Theft Auto as well.

Solaris and The Red Shoes may be the only updated covers in the collection that aren't superior to the originals.

I'm far to be a fan of the blu-upgrade artwork of Mike Leigh "Naked".
The original artwork of the double-DVD release was darker, far better for this movie...
do you know if this has been done by the same who had done the original artwork for the DVD release ?
I used to prefer the original artwork of "Solaris". But the blu is not that bad. I'd dare to say that I even like it...

I'm unable to check right now but I'm pretty sure the covers were all done by different people.

"The Witch" looks a bit cheap, but La Notte and The Uninvited are very nice.

I Married a Witch is fucking awful, a bad imitation of the original poster. Why not just USE the original poster?

Wonderfull to see the Cassavetes box coming to blu-ray, it`s my favorite dvd set in the collection.
too bad though I have already gotten the BFI blu-ray`s that were released...
The Uninvited cover is nice, I think the La Notte cover is hideous though...

I really hate La Notte. Interesting idea, but horrible execution. It literally looks like a printing/package error in the least provocative, most shoddy way. Speaking of "literally" perhaps that's the problem with the whole design idea too.

The Uninvited is probably the best cover of the year so far, so at least it's got that going for it

The Uninvited cover is great. Pity I'm not crazy about the film.

Not to further the DVD-to-Blu cover debate, but I am happy to see they didn't change the cover art for the Cassavetes set.

The Uninvited does look great, if not quite a bit like The Killing's cover.
I really like La Notte, though I can understand why anyone would hate it.
