Funny enough, I just watched this disk and in the interview with the brothers, they mention that they always saw the character as a woman, and mentioned cramps as a specific example... I know when I watched it I was positive that's what it was.

I guess I owe Loo a dollar. Thanks for that. Real beautiful film, probably the best Dardennes I've seen yet. The central performance does so much to prevent this from being poverty porn with her strong headed maturity to her situation and endless sense of fighting. It's just one of the most honest performances of a social group that film gets wrong so often. I especially like how the friend despite being a great person so innocently doesn't understand the troubles of Rosetta. That doesn't make him a bad person by any means, but it does show how ignorant even a good person can in not understanding that there are those you can meet everyday worse off then yourself. Her pragmatism fighting with her compassion on this results in some of the best moments of the film. Great job overall.
