Wow, this has been in development for so long that I'm surprised it finally got made. Looks more promising than anything I'd expect from Ben Stiller or 20th Century Fox, but what is up with Adam Scott's beard?

Just based on the images floating around this looks really different from the Kaye film.

Jane Campion's DP shot this - he did An Angel at My Table, The Piano and The Portrait of a Lady, all amazing looking films (not to mention her best work outside of her debut, Sweetie), so I give him a lot of credit for this trailer.

That plot looks preposterous. Adam Scott would never grow that beard, his face is far too adorable on its own.

Quick, someone get in their time machine and head back to 1939 to warn James Thurber before he writes the story.

Also, kill Hitler.

Andrea Collins (Katherine Heigl) travels from an unmentioned time to April 28, 1889, to Braunau am Inn, Austria, and becomes a housemaid to the Hitler family. Her plan is to kill the infant Adolf Hitler.

This looks good. I liked Tropic Thunder which if nothing else, shows that he's comfortable with balancing a big budget and the story. From what the trailer is showing, this could be quite the extension of that.

Reactions at last night's NYFF screening were all over the place, with "meh" seeming the closest to a consensus take. Lots of "cloying" and "cheesy." It sounds like it's very much geared toward a middle-aged, mainstream crowd, so it might play well with the Academy. Here's a tweet roundup, with full reviews at The Hollywood Reporter, ScreenDaily, and HitFix.

Some of the pans make me a little more intrigued to be honest. I think that the film is aiming towards an older audience rather than all ages makes me have a little hope that it'll at least exhibit a distinct voice-- the idea that 25 year old male critics can't be entirely trusted for every film, as one tweet alluded, is a fair observation

Ugh. I was very wary of this film for a long time. The shoots around NYC were very visible and it was clear early on that the film was going to take the story's premise and shoehorn elements that felt like red flags to me - Hollywood action scenes, the Holy Grail-type girl/reward (i.e. barely a character) that Stiller's pining for, etc.

But he had Jane Campion's cinematographer, and after seeing the dialogue-free trailer, it felt like Dryburgh delivered on his end (despite some glimpses of the above red flags). So that gave me hope...but very, very few films (especially big budget Hollywood films) have been saved from mediocrity by a great cinematographer.

The shoots were very visible some of which was right next to and across the street from my building which was the pain in the ass. I couldn't make this the other night but friends of mine who did were pretty hollywood shlock meh on it altho they did say that it got a pretty solid standing ovation.

I'm wary of standing ovations when a screening's audience has been stacked in that direction (people involved in the film, etc.)

Look at Les Miz, the preview screening at Alice Tully last fall got a long, standing ovation, and lots of vocal gushing afterwards.
