I actually like the City Lights cover. Glad it's finally coming in any case.

The Frances Ha poster was so far superior. Oh well.

Is it too much to ask that Chaplin actually look like Chaplin too?
You can't just stick the mustache and hat on any random English butler type and have it be Chaplin.

so I'm guessing City Lights and Frances Ha will be in the figure 8 bluray keep cases and Tokyo Story will be in a bulky 3 disc digipak?
I wonder if with Tokyo Story they'll just recycle the existing dvd edition in with the new bluray disc.

I don't see why they would do that. If they're working from a new scan, I'm sure Criterion will continue to produce new DVD editions along with Blus just like they always have. Only now they will be released in the same package rather than as separate editions.movielocke wrote:I wonder if with Tokyo Story they'll just recycle the existing dvd edition in with the new bluray disc.

True, but I wonder what will happen with the other blu upgrades, where there's no new scan and previously the old DVD edition was kept in print. Conceivably, those could still be put out as exclusively blu releases- which would mean that those of us trying to upgrade would catch a break, there.Feego wrote:I don't see why they would do that. Can anyone figure out how to get those individual Zatoichi covers in 348x490?

What's the point of producing a new dvd edition if you're not going to sell it on its own?Feego wrote:I don't see why they would do that. If it were something like The Night Porter or A Taste of Cherry or Summertime where the dvd is unacceptable in 2013 (non anamorphic, wrong aspect ratio), then I could see the dvd of the dual format also being new, but for something like Tokyo story, or if they were to update Ikiru, I'd expect them to just say the current DVD is good enough for SD.

Damn, I really wish we had some glamor shots of that Zatoichi set. From what I can squint at, it seems to top everything in terms of packaging design. Though it does have a spine number, so, uhh where'd it go? Perhaps it will be an I Spy puzzle to find the Wacky C in the design. I assume that the spine branding might be on the other side? If not, the OCD collectors will never be able to live with this (though Its attractive enough to just display on its own rather than shelved).

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
It isn't just a matter of the scans, though. (Although that plays a lot into it.) It's also an issue of branding. Look at it this way: They're going to have to press new discs anyway, otherwise it wouldn't fit with the new packaging. But then the menus are also outdated as well, using the old Criterion logo, so they'd have to re-do those. Why not then just make a new DVD with the updated transfer?movielocke wrote:What's the point of producing a new dvd edition if you're not going to sell it on its own?Feego wrote:I don't see why they would do that. I really like the City Lights cover. Hits the right note for the movie's charm IMO.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
Unless they use ones similar to what MOC used, I'm really worried about how these dual format cases will be manufactured. The reason I stopped purchasing the two disc DVD editions like Orpheus and the Chaplins was the difficulty of prying each disc from the hubs. Will the two disc cases they use now for the DVDs move over to these BD/DVD combos?

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I've found that the discs on the two-disc Blu-Rays (like The Samurai Trilogy and Heaven's Gate) are definitely easier to remove than with the two-disc DVDs, so you should have no problem if they keep it up.
