Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I got one batch of discs where all of the cases were pretty much destroyed/shattered, and every once in a while I'll get a package where at least one is busted in some form. At worst for digis, I've only received slightly dinged ones.

That's a whole 'nother issue, but yeah, another pet peeve of mine. Noticed it circa Tokyo Drifter. Usually when there's nothing but bad ones for a particular title, a few months later I've been able to find a good one, but a few are still eluding me (and some I just say ok good enough I guess).swo17 wrote:I don't know how many more times I have to say this, but the cover sleeves included in the Scanavo cases are just as likely to be banged up, crumpled, torn, cut, etc. as digipaks are. If you don't believe this then you're either not scrutinizing the Scanavo cases as closely, or you've been extremely lucky.
Cardboard, I avoid ordering online any more unless there's no other option. And then as often as not I just might return the damaged item and not bother trying again.

Ok domino, no coasters (just) for you.domino harvey wrote: Stop. Calling. These. Discs. Coasters. Numerous people here have already mentioned what you can do with your "useless" disc, including donating to schools, universities, libraries, old folks homes, prisons, the less fortunate, etc instead of complaining, but that hasn't stopped you. Good work.

Took me a few years to latch on to knife cuts, on my list also. (Although if it's just an easily replaceable case I'll just do that. Once it messes up the artwork, which is often the case, all bets are off.)Yaanu wrote:Scanovo cases are as likely to get banged up as digipaks. My copy of BADLANDS has a nice scratch in the plastic coverslip holding sheet thing from what I can only assume to be from a box cutter.

Don't forget "laminate stuck to the spine". I consider this to be worse than scuffed digipack corners since it is so visible while they are on the shelf, and it happens far more often for me.swo17 wrote:I don't know how many more times I have to say this, but the cover sleeves included in the Scanavo cases are just as likely to be banged up, crumpled, torn, cut, etc. as digipaks are. I get a lot of that too, but this is one of those things that doesn't bother me. Go figure.jindianajonz wrote:Don't forget "laminate stuck to the spine". What does bother me though, a bit similar, is when a case is all wrinkled up from when its shrinkwrap was heated up. Have learned to live with it, but sometimes they are so bad I just have to swap the case if I can (so much for the ecology). A few of the old Criterion thick 2-dvd cases were among the worst offenders, pretty hard to find replacements for them any more, just make do with what I can scrape up from my other dvds.

Criterion has done some minor tweaks to the City Lights artwork.

Is this one of those "Spot Six Differences between These Two Pictures" things? I was never good at those.
The Dual Format sticker is in a different place.

The jaw, the eyes, the eyebrows, the nose, the cheek, the right shoulder, the leaves on the stalk. What else?

Well if you want to get nitpicky, the "glare" on the brim of the hat is different (on the right edge), and the shape his hair makes with the hat brim looks slightly tweaked too. Also, the spots on the tie have changed.andyli wrote:The jaw, the eyes, the eyebrows, the nose, the cheek, the right shoulder, the leaves on the stalk. What else?
As with Viridiana, it is clear we have prevailed in getting Criterion to hear our complaints about the cover!

This change is clearly a response to the "That ain't Chaplin, it's Stan Laurel!" comments. It's an improvement.

The city scape behind also looks to have been expanded out both on the left and right side of the frame.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
That is simply due to the different dimension of DVD and blu-ray cover. As I said elsewhere Criterion should discard their 348x490 DVD sized image to avoid confusion, now that they have gone Dual Format.

Personally, I don't see why they can't abandon the 348x490 images and go for a higher resolution, like 500x642 or something.andyli wrote:That is simply due to the different dimension of DVD and blu-ray cover. Maybe they brought in a different artist to modify the art and he/she didn't realize that Chaplin didn't have a goatee.Saturnome wrote:Good thing Chaplin look more like Chaplin now. One thing I don't get though :

Strange that they dumped Molinaro's name from the La cage cover. Some weird contractual requirment they discovered at the last minute, maybe?

Not 100% sure if this belongs here, but a fascinating design post from Sam Smith, complete with spec Blue Jasmine poster. It's exciting that this is an ongoing column.

I think they all look pretty great this month. Though the Grey Gardens does seem a bit too text happy.
