In typical Hulu Plus fashion, they have now taken down all three of Satyajit Ray's Three Daughters. They did this same thing awhile back with Ozu's I Graduated But... and A Straightforward Boy. Those two were only put back up after someone from here notified Criterion.

At least they get put back up a few days after you notify them. More annoyingly (at least, to me of late), is that the random supplements they intermittently add have also left at random, and unlike the films they haven't gone back up regardless of notification.

Re: Criterion on Hulu
At least a dozen Lionsgate titles went from having expiration dates of anywhere from a couple of months away until next March to no longer being offered on the site. Peeping Tom (1960), The Apartment (1996) and Joe the King (1999) being the highlights of the ones I noticed.
I really wish they would offer a couple weeks heads up when they, or the offering distributor, purged titles unexpectedly. That doesn't seem like it would be too much to ask and in the interest of all parties.

Indeed, I sent Criterion an email yesterday to ask whether Three Daughters was intentionally taken down. They said no and that they'd notify Hulu to put it back up. Should take a couple days.headacheboy wrote:In typical Hulu Plus fashion, they have now taken down all three of Satyajit Ray's Three Daughters. Bergman's The Devil's Eye (1960) has been added.

Nagisa Ôshima's Boy (1969) (aka Shônen) added today.Minkin wrote:Bergman's The Devil's Eye (1960) has been added.

Wings of Honneamise (1987), from Bandai, went from an expiration date of August 10th 2014 to no longer available today. Perhaps another Bandai title or two also but that was the only one I was tracking.

Actually Oshima's Boy was added awhile ago (I watched it back in June), they are just featuring it for the 101 Days of Summer

That is great news. I have written Criterion so many times in the past couple of weeks, I was too embarrassed to do so again! Thanks to those of you who did.

I subscribe to the newsletter, but I didn't know a thing about Criterion hosting "Persona" on Hulu, until I was browsing the Criterion channel on the Hulu website recently. Don't know how I missed it, but yes, seems pretty earth-shattering to me.I'm guessing you don't subscribe to the Criterion newsletter?
Has anyone watched the Hulu version, is it in any way different? Is it the same english translation in the subtitles for example, or is this just a rubber-stamp of the previously available presentation?

So is Janus not doing a theatrical run of Persona? If they were, I feel it would have been announced at Film Forum by now.

Re: Criterion on Hulu
It wasn't terribly obvious, it was the clue in the latest newsletter (The picture of Person 'A' and Person 'B'). If you weren't aware, each month the picture in the bottom right hand corner of the monthly newsletter (The ones released at the beginning of the month, not the ones that come with Eclipse releases) is a clue towards some sort of upcoming release. The link I provided goes to the discussion of the newsletter clues.Ibnezra wrote:I subscribe to the newsletter, but I didn't know a thing about Criterion hosting "Persona" on Hulu, until I was browsing the Criterion channel on the Hulu website recently. Re: Criterion on Hulu
Yeah, I checked the link you provided out. I never knew what that was all about, but my email provider formats Criterion's newsletters in a very curious way that makes them almost indecipherable. Thanks for the clarity.

Re: Criterion on Hulu
I would swear the translation of Persona was the same as the MGM disc, but the picture quality looked miles better than the DVD.

Re: Criterion on Hulu
Deep Crimson is a Mexican retelling of the Honeymoon Killers case, in Spanish with long takes sometimes comprising an entire scene. I watched it before The Honeymoon Killers, and I think it's the one I prefer.
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell is from the Eclipse Set "When Horror Came to Shochiku", and it is pretty wacky and replete with bad acting and comical special effects. If you like your social commentary that way, you'll love it.
A Report on the Party and Guests is from the Eclipse set "Pearls from the Czech New Wave". I'm not sure how to describe this fairly short film. It's an indictment of certain fascist attitudes, but really, I just didn't get into it. Feel free to correct my interpretation.

I think it goes well beyond fascist attitudes into attitudes common in all men.

Party and the Guests is probably the best film from the Czech New Wave Eclipse (though of course I prefer the Second Run treatment it received previously)

So what's the deal? They haven't added a new title on Hulu in quite a while.
