They did? I'd always heard it as a rumor but didn't realize they had licensed it already.

I probably should've said it is rumored that Thief was one of two-dozen or so films they picked up in their big (second) deal with MGM. (For the record, the first deal with MGM was for five titles, Salo, House of Games, and Pasolini's Trilogy of Life, licensed to Criterion in exchange for their Raging Bull commentary track.)

I bet it didn't take much arm-twisting to hand over Salo. I've seen it in stores and it just has the UA logo on the back.

I wonder if Refn was at the criterion offices to do an interview on Thief since it has been said that he used that as a huge influence on Drive.. Which is a bit surprising as they're not really that much alike.

He said himself on Elvis Mitchell's podcast that he thought a better comparison was to Manhunter, specifically the love story that takes place in that movie between Dollarhyde and the blind woman.

Speaking of things Winding Refn might or might not want to talk about is there any chance that Crit (or more likely Shout) would pick up Amos Poe's Alphabet City whose home video release could be improved upon.

I interviewed Refn yesterday and he said he was only at Criterion to get free stuff since he was in NYC. He said he wasn't working on anything with Criterion. I had hoped Bleeder, his second feature with no R1 release, was in the offing, but no dice. He could be lying, but that's what he said.

Is the announcement of January titles expected today or tomorrow?

It should be tomorrow. Criterion always makes announcements on the 15th of a month, unless the 15th is on a weekend.

My feeling is that Persona will be a February release that will be accompanied by another Bergman upgrade, possibly Cries and Whispers (although that might just be wishful thinking). I also have a feeling that Eraserhead might become the new Y Tu Mama Tambien, i.e. always predicted, never announced. Now watch both Persona and Eraserhead get announced tomorrow just to make me look stupid.

Anyway, my predictions for January:

Fantastic Mr. Fox
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Y Tu Mama Tambien (finally)
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (BD upgrade)
Throne of Blood (BD upgrade)
Locked
