Yes, inside the outer slipcover, near the bottom of the inside spine in tiny white print.cdnchris wrote:I didn't see it (I actually also meant to take a picture of the interior of the box as well.) For such a great and important film the La Notte cover art (artless really) is so uninspiring. And I'm not one to be critical of the box art.

Some customer at Vulcan Video in Austin has been helping themselves to the Criterion cover art. Amusing flier written to the culprit.

What is someone doing with dvd art? Wouldn't stealing the dvd be more practical? (Not condoning stealing dvds)Gregory wrote:Some customer at Vulcan Video in Austin has been helping themselves to the Criterion cover art. Amusing flier written to the culprit.

They don't actually put the movies out on the shelves, but they leave the boxes out so people can browse comfortably. So, someone's stealing the boxes- which I'd bet anything is so they can put burned copies of the movies in there, too.

This was a regular occurrence when I used to work at Movies Unlimited. We didn't catch on immediately, since the thief was stealing the art and replacing it with a reasonably high-quality inkjet copy. It was exclusively Criterion titles, as well.

So they're making homemade criterions? What'd they do about digipaks?lefeufollet wrote:This was a regular occurrence when I used to work at Movies Unlimited. Yes, I know what you're saying. Still, that design might be appropriate if it were one of a set . . . [inserts meaningful pause]FrauBlucher wrote:For such a great and important film the La Notte cover art (artless really) is so uninspiring. And I'm not one to be critical of the box art.

I quite like the art beyond the rather puzzling decision to crop the images that way. The stark black and white colour scheme and image placement are both great. Of course, those cropped images are a prominent aspect of the design, so I wouldn't argue with anyone that hated it.FrauBlucher wrote:For such a great and important film the La Notte cover art (artless really) is so uninspiring. We can't rule out the possibility that the poster actually corresponds to a future Michael Mann boxset entitled "It's a Mann, Mann, Mann, Mann World".

Re: Out Of Print: StudioCanal Snatches It All Away
Been curious about this lately, did Criterion ever post new cover art for announced but cancelled titles like "Ran" and "Contempt" in their coming soon section? It seems likely they did since they were to be released soon.

Ran was going to have the same cover art as the DVD. Contempt never got a formal announcement.

Does the blu-ray version of the cover art exist?swo17 wrote:Ran was going to have the same cover art as the DVD. Contempt never got a formal announcement.

Re: Out Of Print: StudioCanal Snatches It All Away
There was never any official Blu-ray cover art. When Criterion was first about to go Blu, they sent out a newsletter mentioning several titles, including Contempt, that would be among their first batch of releases. None of those titles were assigned cover art at that time. The Contempt release never materialized so it never got a cover. Presumably it would have just been a miniaturized version of the DVD cover art, since it would be a while before they would start to change the cover art for their upgrades.
