Also Best Director:

Shane Carruth - 'Upstream Color'
J.C. Chandor - 'All Is Lost'
Steve McQueen - '12 Years a Slave'
Jeff Nichols - 'Mud'
Alexander Payne - 'Nebraska'

So, basically, Frances Ha is one of the year's best pictures, but only because of its editing.

Definitely surprising that it wouldn't get a nod in Best Female or Best Supporting Female- I don't see how you could like the movie without liking Gerwig and Sumner's performances.

The Oscar doc shortlist has come a long way. But how did a middling puff piece like Dirty Wars make the cut (preaching to the converted and offering no new information) while something truly innovative like Leviathan was snubbed? Wiseman released a qualifying film this year too, and while I haven't seen it yet I highly doubt that half of these other titles (some of which I have seen) could top it. It seems like the Oscars still favor approachable journalistic narrative over anything more challenging. Lucky for The Act of Killing that its couches its extreme subject matter in a somewhat formally digestable package.

I just noticed on the L.A. Film Critics site that they gave Leviathan the experimental award last year so guessing it wasn't eligible as a 2013 release.

Looking at the rules for qualifying documentary features, it seems that Leviathan would be ineligible because it never had a week-long run in LA and Manhattan (or anywhere in the US, where it only had one or two screenings per theater). Evidently, those screenings -- and even the source image format, if I'm reading the rules correctly -- must also adhere to some pretty specific technical requirements if the film was shot and projected digitally, and Leviathan probably would have been disqualified on those grounds even if it did have qualifying theatrical runs.

I'm sure you're not but why should you be? It's a great film.

Personally, I'm a lot more flummoxed by what Lincoln is doing on there but that's me.
