Oh certainly, the oscars foreign language category is egregiously bad, I wanted to explain how I stumbled upon him. I'm more fascinated that he wrote all the films he directed, and that they also sound deliciously pulpy based on the one or two that have descriptions. an eclipse set would seem to be ideal for someone like him.

Not sure where to put this but this from Scorsese from an interview in Variety...
The helmer stated that he has a great love and admiration of African filmmakers, including Senegalese director, Ousmane Sembene and Desire Ecare’s “Faces of Women,” and as president of the World Cinema Foundation, has been involved in digital restoration of several African films.

“I’ve seen films from West Africa, Nigeria, all over the continent – they’re really inspiring. They seem to focus on two main issues – contemporary social issues and historical, almost mythological questions. It’s the mythology that’s really overwhelmed me. I’d really like to help African film production in any way I can.”
Hopefully some of these films can head CC's way.

Talking of African films that mix contemporary issues with historical, almost mythological questions, that perfectly describes Idrissa Ouedraogo's work. Tilaï (The Law) is perhaps his most well known, but he has tackled issues of immigration and culture clashes in the Paris-set Cry of the Heart, and the modern world against village tradition in Samba Traoré. It would be great to see these films get a wider release.

Criterion just tweeted a photo of Bergman and Ullman on Faro Island from July of 1968.
Perhaps a hint for next week's announcements.

If they do this Persona package as well as I hope they do this package, it could very well be the release of the year. The Liv and Ingmar documentary, maybe both Faro-Dokument films, a nice commentary and some essays, the Liv interview they put up a few months back...

A boy can dream.

While we already know The Freshman is coming, it's interesting that a poster for it has popped up on the Criterion store. Don't remember seeing this one when I looked for something a couple weeks back.

That's nice, let's hope they don't pull a Vivre sa vie and go in another direction for the disc

Scream Factory will be releasing PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE. I'm just glad it's coming but damn...

You expected that of all things to be a Criterion title? It seems like a Scream Factory title to me, despite De Palma's name on it.

A new digital restoration of Obsession premieres in LA this weekend. Very curious if this could be the phantom De Palma Criterion. Being (by a gigantic leap) my favorite De Palma (and having, by an even greater leap, my favorite Bernard Herrmann score) this would be wonderful.

I guess I'm late on the uptake, but Criterion recently added Les Blank's GARLIC IS AS GOOD AS TEN MOTHERS to Hulu. Does this bode well for more Blank titles/BURDEN OF DREAMS upgrade in the near future?

I would hope that BURDEN OF DREAMS gets "BERGMAN ISLAND-ed", if you catch my drift.

EDIT: Though I can't remember if Shout! is already all over those Herzogs.

I just got the Arrow BD last week. I think this is a great release. You also get 2 shorts in addition to the film. As Domino mentioned, it is Reg. A/B/C. I don't think we need a Criterion edition for that, but you never know, Criterion loves to re-release some BDs. You might get lucky :)

It's been there since the summer. There was a whole string of Les Blank documentaries that got added during the 100 Days of Summer. Feel like an Eclipse set has to be coming.

Now I feel silly. I guess I missed that. Thanks for setting me straight. Let's hope for that Eclipse set!

Burden of Dreams is a stacked disc, Bergman Island is not, I think it was just released so people weren't forced to upgrade another disc to get it.

Obsession is one of only 3 discs I've ever imported (the other two are Cleopatra so I didn't have to wait 18 months, and 3 Days of the Condor for the commentary). Personally while it's great to have the Schrader script, I think the packaging is atrocious. It's bad when you have 4 cover choices and they all suck. I'd be thrilled for a Criterion upgrade so I can throw that disc in a drawer and put the script with my film books.

They could be working on another De Palma title, but the one being speculated about in that nearly four year old thread that swo linked to (to show how long there has been speculation about Phantom of the Paradise) most likely was Blow Out, which was released in 2011.

The Arrow disc of Obsession is going to be tough to top. If Criterion can restore the picture (arrow disc is ok, but definitely needs their touch) and can replicate the extras (short film and documentary) as well as the phenomenal documentary with de palma and paul schrader and the inclusion of the entire script, then it might be worth double dipping.

Moe is correct though, the packaging is ugly. I don't care for ANY of the covers, and have replaced my cover with the screenplay cover lol
