Wait a minute. California grapes. "I Hear It Through The Grapevine". Criterion could have just as easily posted a man in a bathtub or Marvin Gaye. Or Marvin Gaye in a bathtub. But they went with the raisins.

I think I know what the clue is for.

What about the paltry food at the picnic? Was the rest taken by a Thief? Or a Foreign Correspondent? Or a The Long Day Closes?

That "Ringu" figure is so much similar to the villain monk character (Machhli Baba) from Ray's Joi Baba Felunath: The Elephant God (1979). You will know if you have seen the film. It is the 2nd film in the series after The Golden Fortress (1974). So, I will be hopeful for a 2 film box set. :D

All that being said, I do think that this year's picture is a much better indicator for On The Beach.....
Or maybe On The Beach will be the new Y Tu Mama Tambien.

I'm not buying the "red scarf" as Balgan mahura. I'd never heard of the film before today. Had anyone? That dude is not Korean. He's some sullen cowboy wearing a jauntily tied red neckerchief.

So that begs the question of why Criterion would chose to pick up that title over The Pawnbroker or Letter From An Unknown Woman.

I suggested this title last year, but could the deer be yet another clue for All That Heaven Allows?

I'm thinking they didn't "choose" one over the other. If they'd had their pick of Republic titles, stuff like Johnny Guitar, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, High Noon, and The Quiet Man would have been at the top of the list. Riot in Cell Block 11 must have slipped from Republic's library at some point. Same thing must have happened to Borzage's Moonrise, which has supposedly also been licensed to Criterion.

Could the fact that there's so much (sometimes arbitrary) red stuff indicate Beach Red?

Riot in Cell Block 11 was produced by Walter Wanger. Many of the films he produced eventually reverted to him, and his estate is handled by The Caidin Trust and Weschester Films. Most of those titles are already licensed to Criterion. Not sure how Moonrise might have gone down.

I was thinking that the use of red was a bit curious, ie. use of blue in previous pictures. Reason for a red umbrella or donkey suit?

I just thought it indicated a separate clue, or possibly just an aesthetic choice to make the picture less bland and coincide with the obvious color inclusion on the Red River clue.

If it was Beach Red, the beach would probably be red

The Narrator Returns wrote:Altman's Kansas City might be a fit for the jazz combo. Someone on a different site suggested the angels were "God moving on the face of the waters", a clue for Heat, which is such a good idea that I may have to accept it as fact.
I would have hoped that Criterion would upgrade other titles or finally release Come Back To The Five And Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean before they started mining his weaker films. I was hoping that the band looked like the one in La Dolce Vita (in which the revelers do end up on the beach), there is of course a woman in pearls, but the rock band (in the beginning of the film) has guitar players, so maybe it's just wishful thinking.

I'm guessing they just let Jason Polan use two crayons this year, and it added interest to the drawing. Obviously, those clues are for Donkey Skin and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, so the red isn't significant. Unless maybe Criterion has decided to abandon Blu-ray for HD-DVD.

The red may have been something of a... red herring, with early guessers taking those clues a bit too literally. The guy in the red neckerchief is definitely not a clue for a film called Red Scarf, and I'm not at all convinced that the red sun is for Red Sun.

....not to mention the fact that there are several films with "red" & "sun" in the title, including a French SciFi scheduled to be released in 2014.

Miramax lost the rights to A Hard Day's Night and the old dvd and blu are fetching big bucks. Apparently it's been restored and is getting a big anniversary release around June.

That is not a clue for Ringu. Ringu is one of the Paramount titles that was reissued by Warner Brothers earlier this year.

Could the drowning angel be a reference to David Gordon Green's Snow Angels?

I thoughtthe girl wiping up blood was in reference to thehilltop lung hemmorhage scene in the wind rises. But thats probaly just because i just sawit. If that is its a wonderful life that is incredible, one of the ten greatest films ever. Tremendously exciting. I was hoping to see a clue for a matter of life and death, but nothing seems to match. I guess the sun cant be sunrise. Could the red scarf be johnny guitar?

No. Paramount licensed both to Warner Brothers.
