I don't know if I really think the sun means anything but the speculation about "Red Sun" is not totally out of line. Terence Young has a phantom page; it's an out of print Image title; several other films from the French production company that financed it are already in the collection.

I've never seen Breaking the Waves, how does the angel with the bell relate to that film?

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
So do the 2 other angels in the water indicate 2 more Demy films (Rochefort? Pied Piper? Model Shop) & will there be a box (with shorts)....or will it just be individual releases.....or will just Donkey Skin & Umbrellas Of Cherbourg (red) get individual releases from the box?

Since you haven't seen the film, you might not want to read this, but here it is (MAJOR SPOILER):BillWatkins wrote:I've never seen Breaking the Waves, how does the angel with the bell relate to that film?
Spoiler
Emily Watson's character, a rather simple-minded woman, allows herself to be sexually degraded because she believes it is God's will. She dies at the end of the film, and a chorus of heavenly bells rings at her moment of death.

Seems to me the jazz combo is a hint for All That Jazz (or has that already been mentioned?).

Didn't realize/remember either of those things. I'm convinced, Ian.ianungstad wrote:I don't know if I really think the sun means anything but the speculation about "Red Sun" is not totally out of line. I still say the tiny littles M(s) scattered on the top of cliff means that M will be re-released in Dual and perhaps with the newest restoration. It toured less than 6 months ago.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Recap:

Four bushes... Unguessed. Possibly irrelevant.

The Deer Hunter? Universal Blu-ray has subpar transfer. Cimino probably thinks it's Michael Cimino's Criterion Collection now.
Blu-ray upgrade of All That Heaven Allows? Was likely hinted at last year, would look great on Blu.
White Reindeer? Both Erik Blomberg's 1953 Cannes entry and the very well-received 2013 IFC film of the same title seem like reasonable possibilities.

A Hard Day's Night seems likely. Richard Lester phantom page, rights recently changed hands, due for re-issue this year.

Guy with light hair wearing a red neckerchief... Ride the Whirlwind? An Anthony Mann/James Stewart western?

Riot in Cell Block 11. Word from a source at Olive confirmed Criterion had the rights.

Nothing entirely convincing. Probably not Ringu. Kwaidan? The Wild Child? Cries and Whispers? The Brood? Valerie and Her Week of Wonders?
Needs some sort of smoking gun evidence. Is the damn spot a separate clue from the girl for Macbeth?

Tootsie

Garlic Is As Good As Ten Mothers (surely along with other Blanks)

Picnic at Hanging Rock upgrade

Box of Tati's Hulot films

The Big Chill ("Heard It Through the Grapevine")? A Raisin in the Sun?

Scanners

The Big Chill? Girl with pearls looks like Thoroughly Modern Millie

Jazz on a Summer's Day?

Red River

Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Donkey Skin, and Lola

It's a Wonderful Life? Breaking the Waves?

Red Sun now seems likely. Terrence Young phantom page, formerly with Image. Possibly A Brighter Summer Day?

Ah. I'll change that. I'm also thinking possibly Ride the Whirlwind for red neckerchief guy. Nicholson and Harry Dean Stanton both wear one in the film.

Band clue could refer to a great, "little" film "Bikur Ha-Tizmoret" (The Band's Visit). US rights are held by Sony.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Considering there's four beetles on the picture, could it mean all four Beatles Movies, not just A Hard days Night? (Help, Magical Mystery Tour, and Yellow Submarine as well)
It could of course just be a reference to the members themself though.

I think the "bay of angels" is all Demy. One of them is a demoiselle de Rochefort (the one with the boa). I guess it's a box, because it's rare for Criterion to release that many standalone titles by one director in a single year.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
According to his Criterion Corner tweets, David Ehrlich seems to have info that it's not It's a Wonderful Life and that Criterion does indeed have the rights to A Hard Day's Night.

I thought the same thing about the box, but I can't imagine boxing Umbrellas. Maybe paired releases of Lola/Bay of Angels, Deluxe Umbrellas, bare bones Donkey. They also have A Slightly Pregnant Man and A Room in Town.

Anybody know what's up with the rights to "Kikujiro?" I'm doubtful, but the angel and bell could be referencing Kitano's film.

How could they release all that Demy and not also do Les demoiselles de Rochefort?Jeff wrote:Maybe paired releases of Lola/Bay of Angels, Deluxe Umbrellas, bare bones Donkey. They also have A Slightly Pregnant Man and A Room in Town.
