It's owned by Apple.
Thanks for the info. A shame if they never finish it up and release it, but I guess that's their right.

How could they release all that Demy and not also do Les demoiselles de Rochefort?
They don't have the rights.

Also looks like Jimmy Stewart in every Anthony Mann western.

They're near a river, so maybe Bend of the River?

It's probably a long shot, but the first thing that came to mind when I saw the California Raisin separate from the rest of the dancers was California Split.

Thoroughly Modern Millie?
Yes
As much as I love this film, does it have enough of a cult following and/or a rejuvenated reputation among critics to warrant the Criterion treatment? It wasn't badly received upon release but until the Broadway musical came out over a dozen years ago, it was pretty much forgotten.

Do we know this for sure, or are you just speculating that that might be why there isn't a clear hint for it? I thought Janus had the rights to several more titles than are being mentioned here.

I don't actually think Millie is likely. That's just what I couldn't think of that the image was reminding me of.

The five titles that I mentioned are the only ones Janus was credited with during the recent theatrical retrospective. Young Girls is still credited to Miramax. I would love it if that has changed.

About the Tati box (which seems pretty incontrovertible as a clue), didn't StudioCanal take Trafic back from Criterion? Has that situation changed? (Gosh I hope so...)

StudioCanal took all of them away, and then the Tati estate gave (all of?) them back.

Maybe. Trafic is the only one that Criterion actually licensed from StudioCanal. The others were all initially licensed from Les Films de Mon Oncle (Tati estate). Canal may actually still have U.S. rights to Trafic. I've had so many versions of these films. Would be nice to have one definitive box.

Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll be a Qatsi Trilogy/Naqoyqatsi situation, where Lionsgate/Miramax decide that they aren't going to release The Young Girls of Rochefort on Blu, so they license it to Criterion to include in their Jacques Demy box set. [-o<

Is the collection of characters and clues on the beach an overall clue to, say, Stanley Kramer's ON THE BEACH?
And I read the band might be a reference to THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, fyi.

A Hulot box sounds great.

The thought of Criterion releasing a Beatles film make keep me up tonight. Here's hoping they record some new extras with Paul, Ringo and George Martin.

The Maysles' Beatles film would be a perfect extra for 'A Hard Day's Night'.

As would The Running, Jumping, and Standing Still Film. And this is a pipe dream of epic proportions, but I'd love to see a commentary with Richard Lester and Steven Soderbergh, even if it's just them rehashing what they said in Getting Away With It.

And July is the 50th anniversary of the film's release, in a year when a lot of 50th anniversary Beatles celebrations are scheduled.

At one time it was, but those rights expired. As far as we know, the rights to Young Girls have not expired yet. Licensed from different people.

The Masked Marvel wrote:Anybody know what's up with the rights to "Kikujiro?" I'm doubtful, but the angel and bell could be referencing Kitano's film.
seriously. i really think that's what the angel with the bell is, especially with Ehrlich confirming that it isn't It's a Wonderful Life. Kikujiro on Bluray would be magic, and there seriously are not enough contemporary Japanese films in the collection (more Kore-eda and Cure would be a good place to start, too)

I'd bet the farm on Trafic being a part of the Tati set. that release seems pretty definitive to me. it'll probably be a July release or something with all of his features, all the old extras, plus new ones for Jour de Fete and Parade, with more. excited to see what they do with Demy too.

Macbeth would be incredible. Jazz on a Summer's Day (or Buena Vista Social Club!!!), Picnic at Hanging Rock, and hopefully Polanski's Macbeth and Truffaut's the Wild Child would be great.

also no way is that the Deer Hunter. too obvious.

wish this was all a clue for La Dolce Vita (everyone on the beach) but who knows. i think we'll see that this year anyway. first thing I thought of when I saw the jazz band was La Notte, which leads me to my ridiculous long shot clue...three players = L'Avventura, La Notte, L'Eclisse dual format box (I'd double dip on La Notte). i do like the idea of them doing M in the new restoration on dual (3 M's = three separate sources they've worked with on that movie?)

I would so love the angels frolicking in the water to point to Sirens; the decade-old, non-anamorphic DVD is in dire need of new life.

That would make sense then. Perhaps the only reason Demy and Tati are being boxed up is to include the respective Studio Canal titles that would otherwise not make it (Ala Qatsi)... plus a way to include the SD Tati film and the atrocious Demy film(s).
I do look forward to the Demy Zatoichi box though..

Btw @Antnield, I was the first to discover that was Donkey skin (said it was my favorite Demy) - thus I meant the angel with the boa around her neck, which, to my sleepy eye looked like The Tingler. Still, would be great if any Castle film made it into Criterion (Sony recently axed that Castle Set and The Tingler has not found a new home yet). But yeah, its probably Lola, since its missing The Tingler's antenna + The Tingler used the antenna to kill, not strangle like a snake.

I can sleep soundly at night knowing Its not a Wonderful Life.

That does rather look like Jimmy stewart at that picnic. He wears a red scarf in The Far country (picture is hard to tell, but it is indeed red).

And what's with the bloody screwdriver at the picnic?
