2.35:1 corresponding to CinemaScope in the '50s and '60s, and 1.85:1 to standard modern widescreen TV displays.

Jeff wrote:Yes, all scenes with the "lobby boy" present take place would have to take place in the earliest (1.33) time period. F. Murray Abraham plays him as an adult (2.35), and that's him doing the voiceover. Jude Law and Jason Schwartzman are also apparently in the 2.35 time period. I can only tell for sure that Tom Wilkinson is in 1.85 time. Matthew Amalric may be too, but his background is too dark to be sure of the framing. It appears that every other character is from 1.33 time, so that must be the setting for the bulk of the film. Nice to see another major director framing a film in Academy.

EDIT: It actually appears that while the 1.33 is definitely the oldest time period, the 2.35 is the middle one, and 1.85 is present day. I believe Jude Law and Tom Wilkinson are playing the same character.
Amalric appears in the reading of the will scene, when Brody's character confronts Gustav. He may be an associate of Brody and Devoe's characters. His credit shot is in 1.33 as well (discovered by tilting my laptop screen downward).

It does look like a really great time, not to mention gorgeous (as expected). Also, I'm thrilled Saoirse Ronan is in this, even if it's a minor role - she's by and far my favorite of the current crop of young actresses and this looks like a very interesting character.

That was my guess of how they would be used when I first heard about the 3 ratios.

It looks like an attempt at highly chaotic silliness (meant in the best way possible) much like Life Aquatic was (to me, anyway) or inspired to be. More of a pure comedy, which is a bit of a contrast to Moonrise which though it had some humorous moments felt more dramatic or at least neutral between the lines of comedy and drama.

One of the Youtube comments on the trailer was something along the lines of "Wes Anderson went full Wes Anderson. Never go full Wes Anderson" - I sorta agree.

I will admit it looks funny but where Moonrise Kingdom resembled somewhat of a new direction albeit with classical Anderson tropes this one appears to be Wes Anderson trying to copy Wes Anderson.

That seems like a surprising conclusion to be able to reach from 150 seconds of footage.

People have said that about his last few trailers. It's nothing new to imply that this filmmaker has made a movie that he would make, as scintillating as that was the first time someone said it

Hm, $989.50 per ticket to fly to Berlin that week. Oh well, guess I have to wait for the wide release. Unless someone wants to sponsor me to see it and write a forum review, that is. \:D/

I don't mean to jump the gun but this looks like one of those special films. One that gets put on 'greatest films of all time' lists. I know I am speaking the language of hyperbole, but there are so many elements working in favor of this being special. Great cast, the time period, locale and a crime thriller all thrown into a stew stirred by Chef Wes. I can't wait.

There appears to be a boundless love for cinema (both its heritage and for filmmaking as a medium) on display here. It's also by and far the strongest congregation of Great actors for a single film in recent memory.

I'm just glad to see F. Murray Abraham in more top-shelf stuff lately, between this and his supporting roles on both the last couple seasons of Homeland and in Inside Llewyn Davis.

I suspect you're sublimely unaware of this, but in British English the phrase "top-shelf stuff" means porn.

(It's where newsagents traditionally place things out of reach of impressionable children.)

In American English "top shelf" is similar to "top drawer" in UK English. (A major indie comics publisher here is called Top Shelf, and they even have a "Top Shelf Kids Club"!) There's also a third meaning, found in the lexicon of Douche English.

This is the first film of 2014 that I'm really looking forward to. And I love that Wes doesn't wait for a specific time of year to release his films.

I've come to the conclusion that he and his distributors are acutely aware that regardless of how critically acclaimed his films may be, they don't play for the awards crowd. They're going to be most successful when they have a place on the schedule where they have room to breathe with no similarly skewing films in the marketplace. Moonrise Kingdom opened at the end of May and ran for over five months.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
