Could the man dancing on the left be a reference to Peter Sellers in The Party?

You might have just hit the nail on the head. I was sure it must be a reference to a 60s movie, based on the girls' dresses, and the guy is dressed like Sellers.justeleblanc wrote:Could the man dancing on the left be a reference to Peter Sellers in The Party?

Oh, I hadn't thought of that. The Party is my favorite comedy, and I would be elated if Criterion releases this. What are the chances?justeleblanc wrote:Could the man dancing on the left be a reference to Peter Sellers in The Party?

I would love for it to be The Party as well. Perhaps this scene might give some better weight to this theory - since it has the saxophone, the girl with necklace, funky dancing, etc (though it does look like the necklace girl, suit guy and Scanners guy are doing some sort of showtunes in the wacky drawing)

I don't mean to be a 'Party' pooper, and it depends on how much stock you put into phantom pages, but Blake Edwards doesn't have one. Of course, he could be added shortly if it is indeed The Party.

Another possibility for the sun clue...The Profound Desire of the Gods, perhaps?

I think what we all actually assumed was a red sun is actually a meteor crashing into the beach, therefore Armageddon on Blu-ray in July for its 16th anniversary

Or possibly the 35th anniversary of the seminal Ronald Neame film Meteor.

"Seminal" meaning "helped kill off a trend that was already fizzling out"?

I just noticed the restoration of Il Sorpasso at the film forum is held by Janus Films, and not to fan any more flames of wild accusations about things in the New Years drawing, but the film does have strong coastal settings and a climactic cliff scene, should we be expecting it sometime this year?

I'd expect it to hit shelves around the same time as Y Tu Mama Tambien.adavis53 wrote:I just noticed the restoration of Il Sorpasso at the film forum is held by Janus Films, and not to fan any more flames of wild accusations about things in the New Years drawing, but the film does have strong coastal settings and a climactic cliff scene, should we be expecting it sometime this year?

The flying angel seems to be holding two objects. The bell in her left hand and something that looks, to me, like a syringe in her right hand. Don't know what that could mean.

Why couldn't the angel with wings be Hawks' "Only Angels Have Wings" or a double clue?
Both from Sony's Catalog.

And hopefully Criterion will add Michael Bay's performance at CES 2014 to the extras, since it clearly demonstrates that he's the most intelligent and articulate director working in Hollywood today.adavis53 wrote:I think what we all actually assumed was a red sun is actually a meteor crashing into the beach, therefore Armageddon on Blu-ray in July for its 16th anniversary

Why demote it to an extra. That deserves a Bluray to itself, with commentary track and extras.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
A Blu of Tokyo Olympiad would be superb but highly unlikely. According to Nick from MoC there are major rights issues as the IOC claims the international rights (i.e. outside of Japan) and are apparently unwilling to license it. Which is a real shame. I'm guessing they have done the same to Shinoda's Sapporo Winter Olympics film. If the rights are ever resolved they would make a brilliant box set.
Regarding the Tati box, although the clue could point to nothing else, it does seem strange, as Studiocanal recently took the rights back from the BFI in the UK and have done the same to other titles previously with Criterion (e.g. Pierrot Le Fou). Is this an older agreement that Criterion are now releasing or are the rights with someone else in the US?
