Some reporting he was found with a needle in his arm, which would suggest a relapse of his struggles with heroin. This is just horrible.

It's unfortunately been updated with more facts. Lots of NY agencies reporting this one. It looks to be true, tragically. What's extra sad is he was just in the news Friday for signing Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal to his next directorial project

CNN is reporting and IMDB has his death date listed already. Just incredibly awful! I live several blocks from him and used to see him walking around the neighborhood. Sigh.

That's awful, awful news. Of course all his Paul Thomas Anderson performances are impeccable and his role in The Talented Mr Ripley was a standout, but I'll particularly treasure his Lester Bangs in Almost Famous and his role in Happiness. A Late Quartet was a beautiful film too.

Yes, absolutely and he made out-acting Meryl Streep seem effortless, which was no mean feat.

Synecdoche, New York as well, what a film. And while I think Joel Schumacher's film Flawless was pretty badly flawed, he was fearless as a drag queen interacting with Robert De Niro's character (sort of a clumsier prefiguring of Dallas Buyer's Club).

Of all his films, I feel most drawn to watch Synecdoche, New York right now. So that's where you'll find me, trying to latch onto perhaps his coldest, most distant work.

Terrible news. Didn't even know he'd had substance abuse problems. Guess his personal experience added something extra to the utterly convincing heroin scene in Before The Devil Knows You're Dead as well as his character's various indulgences in The Master.

I was, regrettably, not that impressed by The Master, but Hoffman's performance was mesmerizing. I happened to read Lawrence Wright's (jaw-dropping) new book on Scientology shortly afterward, and realized that Hoffman absolutely nailed the complex personality of his Hubbard-derived character -- so much so, in fact, that I suspect I would've had a much harder time understanding the psychology behind the beginnings of Scientology if Hoffman hadn't interpreted it for me.

He was just impossibly talented -- every role seemed to be the part he was born to play.

Yesterday, America's greatest living screen actor was probably Philip Seymour Hoffman. Today it's someone else. So depressing.

I just watched Capote for the first time a few weeks back. Loved it. Happiness is one of my favorite films. He was wonderful in that too. RIP.

A horrible shock, a really great actor and a deserved Oscar winner. I can only but echo everyone else's sentiments and say: RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. Your films will always live on.
