But if you check the link, the impression from Scavano is that they did not have a 3 disc version prior to the BD.com user contacting them, or that they even realised there was any demand for them.

Right you are. I hadn't read that. I'm sure it at least spurred talks with Criterion. Still I can't imagine Scanavo going to the trouble and expense to custom manufacture something just based on a few fan requests from a Blu-ray forum. They've got to know that a partner plans on ordering thousands of the cases.

It remains surprising to me that Scanavo never got contacted by Criterion prior to this to have a 3-discs BD sized plastic cases.
Was it such a cost-saving to go Dual Format that they can do all these digipacks ? Or is it not a big oncost to do the digis ?

Wonder why they didn't wait for the new case to be ready to switch over then?

I imagine it cost Criterion a pretty penny to coax Scanavo into developing this as opposed to the already tried and tested digipacks. I assume they're moving forward with it as a result of the (mildish) backlash against those who aren't please to get entire months worth of dinged and damaged cases. Given the recent addition of some DVD only releases and now this attempt to create keepcases it seems like this dual-format change hasn't been working as economically well as Criterion wanted it to and they're doing their best to improve it.

I still believe it's more expensive to develop and manufacture one digipack for one release than to get a specific 3-discs BD-sized Scanavo case which can be ordered by thousands and used for different releases.
Plus, I guess it's also, beyond the volume argument, more expensive from a pure raw material and manufacturing point of view.

Yes indeed. Plus people who think that Digipacks look cheap, flimsy, not homogenous with the rest of the collection etc etc etc

I just received my regular Tuesday supply of Criterions. What is it? Do I have a corner on the gentlest mail carriers in these United States. Never a ding or scratch, and the boxed sets make the films look as classy as a dang good novel. Haters gonna hate, like my girl Miley says.

Does anyone know where I could find decent-size images (>500px) for the covers of individual Eclipse titles? Criterion's site doesn't seem to have them any more and the links in the cover art threads are broken for anything going back more than a few years it seems.

I'm not sure of a consistent place to find them, but if you go on to the Criterion website, right click the cover image you want and click open it in a new tab, and then right click again to google image search it, you can more or less always find a good sized one.

Right click on the image on Criterion's site, copy the address somewhere, and replace the 'w100' at the end with 'original'.

My first digipack, Foreign Correspondent, made it all the way to third world (England) without any damage. It's a handsomely designed release, but my problem with this thing is how awful it looks on a shelf. This is a spine-numbered collection but they don't seem to have any regard for consistency of appearance. Even if it was possible to get over the fact that it's unnecessarily designed to be over-large so it juts out, above and in front of, all of the other cases, I'd still be left with the question of which way to orient the thing. Do I place it so that the true spine is facing outwards, which means that two cover arts are kissing each other, or do I put the false spine out so that I'm constantly forced to look at the opening of this box? Awful.

That's unfortunately a constant with Criterion digipacks (and their boxsets too). I never fully understood why their digipacks / boxsets look like they have been designed in an opposite look. But I admit that, in the end, I don't care so much.

Your false-spined digipack and its neighboring plastic keep case should be able to kiss or do whatever they please ... as long as they reside in a state or country protecting this behavior. I think you are safe in the U.K.

Never understood the sorts who have the opening facing outwards. I see it quite often in pictures of people's shelves. As for any miscegenation between the digipack and amaray races, I tend to look at my collection head on, meaning I don't have to witness such abomination

Today, for the first time in my "crazy about Criterion digipaks" life, I will be receiving my package straight from Criterion warehouse. I know, that's nothing new to you all. What's different about this shipment is that this package contains 6 of their latest fat digipaks. I usually avoid buying digipaks online. I am so excited to find out how carefully Criterion package their digipaks for shipping. I should keep that guy's email handy. There could be a lot of casualties [-o<

Oh boy, that is going to be a heavy box for you.
I am sad that I could not be home at the time the UPS guy will show up. I could have just snatched it from his hand and not letting him drop the box at my door step

Mine are (now finally once again) all in drawers, but I ended up with this scheme, I think because the orientation of the box set artwork matches the orientation of the keepcase artwork that way. Also, it's easier to pick up a box set that way and not have the contents fall out.

And yup, I'm about to experience the wonder of digipaks and keepcases packed together pretty soon myself. (My last mixed criterion order was a long time ago, didn't go all that well, but presumably this time it will work out just fine.)

I received four digipaks and Zatoichi rumbling around inside a 3/4 empty box big enough to be used to bury a medium sized dog and all five items were in perfect condition, not even a scuff or crumple. Truly I must be the son of God
