a great slate of releases. Finally, picnic at Hanging Rock. From the initial 1998 releases, that leaves only the poor, lonesome, wrong aspect ratio Summertime disc without an upgrade and still in print.

Light on new releases -- though for the third month, there's one big title -- but arguably the best upgrade month since the first slate of Blus.

I suppose if they're going to upgrade Picnic without The Last Wave showing up at the same time, I'm just going to assume I can confidently just finally buy a used copy of the Last Wave DVD, because it's probably gonna be a while.

That's one way to ensure that The Last Wave will get a Blu-ray upgrade right away: Pay for the DVD. I don't mean that in a highfalutin support Criterion way, I mean that it always seems to work out that way

All bets have been off since Fat Girl got upgraded. You just never know which of the less popular (in theory) in regards to potential sales titles may be a favorite to someone with pull at Criterion.

Considering how long it's taken for Picnic to get an upgrade, I'll reluctantly concur. But... it really does deserve an upgrade nearly as much as Picnic did.

The Fat Girl Blu came out three years ago! If all bets were truly off, there'd be a comparably left-field upgrade a lot more recent than that. There's a minor surprise once in a while -- didn't think there was that much demand for Hearts and Minds, as a timely example -- but overall the upgrades have been quite predictable -- Wes Anderson movies, color Hollywood films, the better-known arthouse titles etc. The Last Wave may take a while, but it seems like color films after 1970 are slightly more likely to get the treatment.

Probably, or "Judex", which is a complete masterpiece. So, nothing against any of the new releases as such, but can they please stop to bore me with releases of films that are already available in perfectly acceptable versions?

Not a single film that hasn't been already out in a good release, either by Criterion themselves or elsewhere in the world. The "Judex" extras look great, admittedly, but if they do release Franju, why not "Thomas l'Imposteur", for heavens sake? All right, I'm perfectly aware that this should go into the "Why don't they release what I want" thread, but from the point-of-view of someone who actually wants to see some important films saved from bad-edition (or not available at all) hell, this must be the worst month for quite some time.

I can also confirm that Mulvaney himself (or whoever used the handle around the time of the film's release if he's not a real person) is a huge fan of the film.

Yes, and there was some compelling speculation here at the time that Criterion wanted to get a couple of female directed-titles out on Blu. Sweetie had come out the month before.

I suppose I've been a little spoiled by the many 4K scans in recent months. Not to complain - I'm sure they'll all look lovely and this is far and away the best month in a VERY long time.

If the movie's compressed down into 1080p, would a 2K or 4K restoration source make that much of a difference provided that they're both done with similarly modern tools?

With 4K, you have more of a chance to see intricate details in an image. Compressing it down to 4K would allow those details to be preserved in the overall 1080p image. 2K doesn't show as much detail, so compression would create a similar image.

It's like taking one version of a complex image that is 1500x pixels and one that is 750x pixels, and then shrinking both down to 500x pixels. Sorta. Kinda.

What's with the hate for Fat Girl? It might not be Catherine Breillat's best, but it's a pretty bold and sensitive drama.

Fat Girl probably sells a lot since it has a lot of sex scenes and it has been known for his "controversial scenes".
I agree with Tommaso, Thomas l'imposteur would be a great release.

I think a month with only two new films is very disappointing... My guess is that they planned a box set release but ended up deciding to release it on July 22nd...

Pretty great month all around. Great to finally see an upgrade of Picnic at Hanging Rock (gosh, that cover is astounding). Many films I'll be checking out for the first time.

I actually liked Fat Girl... up until those ridiculous final ten minutes. What on Earth was Breillat thinking?

Only title i'm moderately interested in L'eclisse and it's my least favorite Antonioni. I'll get it to round out the collection and hopefully support them releasing a L'avventura upgrade.

Haven't seen Judex, so I'll probably blind buy it cause it looks interesting. Maybe same with Hard Day's Night. Last time I saw those Beatles films was as a kid and I don't remember them being particularly good, definitely not as fun as something like Head.

Still waiting on anything Lynch, Y tu mama and anything Cronenberg.

Just some random speculation by me based on the fact that Criterion owned Picnic at Hanging Rock, The Last Wave, The Cars That Ate Paris, and The Plumber (and Homesdale too as it turns out!). Several more level-headed members pointed out that Criterion wasn't likely to put a major film like Picnic in a box. I suppose a set of the other three is still possible.
