Re: Criterion on Hulu, iTunes, and Amazon

#901 Post by Shrew »

The Lodger, Downhill, and The Pleasure Garden rights all seemed to be owned by ITV and were released together by Network (pre-restorations). Theoretically, they should be available and not with Studio Canal, and from the same source as Lodger, so one would hope Criterion would have gotten the rights to the others with The Lodger, even just as extras. Of course, there's no guarantee.

Easy Virtue seems to be an orphan though. It may simply be doomed.

Who owns Odd Man Out in the US? I thought it was a Studio Canal title.

Seems to be the same source as the Hitchocks. Rank aka Gaumont aka ITV.

Easy Virtue, as least according to this, appears to also be with ITV.

Yes, it looks like it was removed as quickly as it was put up.

Well, Evergreen was a Criterion release in the laserdisc days, so it may make the leap to DVD/Blu-ray in the near future.

Compton Bennett’s The Seventh Veil (1945) on Itunes (via CriterionCast).

Looks like MGM have retained streaming rights, thus its not on Hulu. Alongside the Hitchcocks + Persona it looks like Janus has picked up quite a lot of MGM backcatalog (though not streaming rights). Speculation on what else was probably bought?

Hitchcock's Downhill (along with The Lodger) is available through Amazon Instant Video. I hope it has the green seasickness tinting (I'm sure it does).

I hope these as well as Young and Innocent and Sabotage make it to blu. I'd hate to see them relegated only to an SD Eclipse set or to remain digital exclusives.

'La Notte' has been added. It must have been simultaneously with 'The Great Beauty' because I didn't notice it the other day.

multi-year renewal
Well, that's encouraging! For all the bickering we do about it, Hulu does a pretty good job with these titles, their streaming tends to be more reliable than any other service for me in terms of picture quality/buffering, and the curation, while it leaves more to be desired, is very pleasant - Criterion titles being split into their own area, lovely stills/covers, etc. I can't think of a better home for the Criterion Collection in the streaming universe.

Yea! There's not exactly anything that I was looking for here, but I'm always happy to try out a blind viewing from Criterion. It's just a shame that there are no possibilities for the 80s viewing project here.

Is it a stretch to think that the long wait for new releases on Hulu was related to contract negotiations between the two companies?

Not necessarily. Why upload new content when the future of the service hangs in the balance?
